How to start a running routine and stick with it

Does this sound familiar? You start a running routine, and after two weeks, you miss a day. Then another day. Then eventually, it's no longer a routine.

Our busy everyday lives can often get in the way of making sure we stay healthy and fit. You are not alone in that struggle. I think most of us have been there once or twice. It’s not just about opening up your front door and choosing to go for that run. It takes persistence, patients, and preservation to find a running routine that you can stick to for good. The good news is there are plenty of technics that you can put in place so that running doesn’t have to feel like such a chore.

First, you want to set a realistic goal with a realistic schedule. You will be more likely to stick to a routine if you set yourself up for success. If you know that running five days a week is unrealistic and unsustainable, then choose to run two or three days instead. Make practical choices in your schedule that you know you can commit to and follow. Next, find a friend. Studies show that you are more likely to stick to your routine if you partner up. You can motivate each other and push each other to stay dedicated and committed.

Another great idea is to mix it up. Changing the route you run can break up the monotony of the running experience. If you don't like the route you run, you are more likely to lose interest in the entire experience. Try choosing a route you enjoy running. Take a drive to the beach and enjoy a run on the sand. Find a park with a beautiful running trail. The softer service of the trail’s ground can also be helpful for those who suffer from any kind of ankle or knee trouble. A short drive is a small price to pay if it can provide inspiration for you. Also, choosing the ideal time of day for your run is extremely important. If you’re not a morning person deciding to go for a run before work may not be the best idea. Choosing to run during the afternoon or evening may be a better solution. You will be more likely to stick to your routine if the time you select is practical and comfortable for you. You can also try sprucing up your routine with a playlist. Music can be incredibly uplifting and make a tremendous difference in your running experience. You can create a playlist just for running. You can add all your favorite songs, especially songs that get you moving and motivated. Listing to music can help you run longer distances. It can increase your speed and make you run faster. The music serves as a distraction, and it can provide you with tons of inspiration.

How you treat your feet and what you put on them can also be the key to success. Finding the right pair of running shoes is one of the most important aspects of running. Your running shoes need to fit you well, and they need to provide the proper support for your feet. The wrong running shoe can cause blisters and lead to injuries like plantar fasciitis and shin splints. So take time and put the proper amount of dedication into choosing the perfect running shoe. Just as important as your feet is your mind. It’s essential that you mentally prepare your mind for this commitment. Remind yourself that quitting is not an option for you. Repeat to yourself that you are committed and dedicated to this journey. When you reach the point where it starts feeling like it’s getting too hard, tell yourself that you will not quit. Try creating a mental motto for those difficult days.

The bottom line is sticking to your running routine can become a reality if you do it on your own terms. Celebrate yourself. It’s so important to reward yourself for your accomplishments. Set small goals, and Treat yourself to something special when you meet them. Maybe you buy that shirt in the store you've been eyeing. Perhaps you get a sitter for the kids for a couple of hours and do something special for yourself. Never let yourself forget that your achievements deserve to be recognized. Lastly, find your motivation and hold it close to you. Remember setting up realistic goals is the key. You can do anything you put your mind to; you just have to believe in yourself.
