HOW TO GET INTO THE MINDSET OF LOOSING WEIGHT
Shane Cuthbert

THE SECRET
I it all comes down to what your intentions are. What’s your end goal? What are you really trying to achieve here. Are you trying to lose weight? Okay, awesome! and then what? To get over a breakup or find true love? Okay, again though, what next? What is the purpose of achieving these things?
Here’s an example. One of the most common things people will tell me about weight loss, is that they have had success with a particular method in the past, and would consider doing that thing again. “I know it worked for me before” and so they say “so I think it’s best to do that again.” So if you’d like to know how to get into that mindset of loosing weight, it’s important that we get real about this for a moment, especially if you’re at the point where your sick of going around in circles with this, or any other problem that you want to change.
If you want to get into the mindset to lose some weight, we must start by defining terms like ‘worked’. In my books, it ‘works’ if it trains you or helps to develop better habits so that you no longer have the particular problem, if you can instead can clear space in your mind to work on a different problem as you clear more and more problems out of the way as you move through life, then, that works. Going around the one problem really robs you of that necessary space needed to focus on all the others.
Let me give you an example of how this relates to a weight loss case study so that you can better see how to get in the mindset to lose weight.
THE EXAMPLE
I had a client the other day who told me she bought an exercise bike about six months ago. But as is the fate of most exercise bikes, treadmills and gym equipment, it just sits there getting dusty. So she is thinking about getting rid of it. The reason, is that she lacks the energy or motivation to use it and wants to know how to get back into the mindset to lose weight.
My suggestion was this, to make a routine where you do just one minute of walking on the treadmill each day. After all, this requires very little energy. She says “But doing one minute of walking per day isn’t enough to make any difference to my weight.”
This is true, however the weight is not the cause of her problem, it’s the consequence or the result of the problem. The cause is the thinking and underlying beliefs about the particular problem. So by getting on the treadmill for just 1 minute per day, She’s communicating something very different to herself here. She’s telling herself that she doesn’t need to wait until she feels enough energy to have a hard workout before giving herself permission to get started. The catch is, after 1 minute, She’s probably feeling like continuing on anyway because you have the momentum. Its always harder to get started when it comes to training and exercise. But if not, then just give yourself permission to stop. Either way, the key is to break down that dangerous ‘black and white’ thinking which underpins this problem, instead learning how to change your thinking by changing the rules and permissions in which you communicate to yourself. That’s how to really get into that mindset to lose weight.
You likely won’t lose any weight straight away. However, it’s really important to remember this point, your weight is not the cause of the problem, your over eating is not the cause of the problem and your lack of exercise is not the cause of the problem either. Those things are coming from your headspace, your thinking and your fixed mindset. The reality is that it might take you a while to rewire your brain before the consequences of the problem start to show real noticeable changes. If you’re only ever looking on the outside, then you’re going to have a hard time changing the problem which ultimately, stems from within you. If you want to know how to get in the mindset to lose weight though, the key is to start looking less to the outside (which includes the food labels and the scales) and instead, start turning your attention inwards, to the inside.
Think of a diet or exercise that you had success with in the past, how successful is it looking now?
