Hello Everyone!
Today I have decided to share my Keto experience with you, A.K.A the ketogenic diet. After Christmas and New Year’s Eve celebrations, we all need a little bit of Keto in our lives.
I started Keto in the beginning of August and continued it until mid-September. In a months’ and a half time my body experienced an incredible transformation like never before.
Throughout my life, I have tried many different diets, like Military and Vegan diet, but none of those gave me the result I wanted. KETO not only helped me achieve the desired body shape without restricting my meal portions, but also helped me regain confidence.
Here is everything you need to know about my Keto experience, the advantages and also the downsides of this drastic change in diet. Please keep in mind that I am not a nutritionist. All the information is from my personal experience and the research I have conducted while I was keeping up with the diet.
How did it all start?
Well it usually takes a bit of mental preparation for me to start a new diet because it is hard to commit to, especially the ones that restrict the meal portions (Military diet).
Keto was different. I heard one of my colleagues at work talking about this diet and at that time I desperately needed to lose weight, so, the next morning I just started it. I was researching and picking my food as I was following. Turned out to be the longest diet I have ever stuck to.
What is KETO?
Before jumping into Keto, like I did, I am going to give you a quick introduction about KETO and why is it a trend. It’s essentially a very low-carb, high-fat diet, which can lead to fast weight loss.
On a daily basis our bodies are using glucose known as sugar, as a primary source energy, and when we start to consume less of it (carbs and sugar), we force to switch our metabolism in burning stored fat instead of glucose. This process sometimes occurs on a lower scale when we sleep for long period of time, when we accidentally skip meals ,and when we fast.
In the keto diet, the body is fuelled through protein intake and I am not talking about the protein shake but the actual food; meat, cheese, fish etc. Long story short: the body starts burning stored fats instead of the carbs you eat on daily basis.
What can you eat?
When I started the KETO lifestyle, I went a little bit extreme in the beginning. I was consuming up to 30 gr carbs daily, which I was getting from different vegetables such as, avocados, broccoli, cucumbers, tomatoes, and cauliflower etc.
If you are a beginner, I would recommend starting with 60 gr carbs per day because the transition will be smoother.
As a meat and cheese lover, Keto was the best diet I have ever followed because it allowed me to eat as much as I wanted. Although, there is a restriction on veggies. Root vegetables such as potatoes and carrots, are a BIG NO.
On the other hand, you can eat lots of different salads and fruits like strawberries and blueberries; which will help in vitamin intake as well.
If you are a big fan of seafood, I have a great news; seafood is not restricted in Keto. Salmon and shrimps were my best friends while ketoing.
What can you expect the first three days?
Do NOT keep your expectations high the first days or the first week. It takes a bit of time for the body to adjust to the new lifestyle (3–4 days). It’s like moving to a different country without speaking the language; you need to adjust. It is totally OK to have little headaches here and there in the first three days and to crave different types of desserts and chocolates (DO NOT get tempted).
Once you pass the first three days you will feel better and you will start to love consuming protein-based food.
Another great tip which will help the body adjust faster to the new diet is to keep yourself hydrated. I was drinking 2–3 litters of water per day which somehow helped me with the sugar cravings as well.
When can you see results?
The very first rule of the Keto diet is: COMMIT. You have to be in the right state of mind to start and keep going with the diet. Unfortunately, you won’t see any results in the first 3–4 days. The body is preparing for the new lifestyle. Although I did see a major difference after two weeks; I dropped 3kg and my stomach flattened a lot. Seeing such an amazing result, I decided to keep going for another 4 weeks.
Can you have a Cheat day?
Unlike other diets, having a cheat day or weekend, isn’t really an option. Once your body is kicked out of ketosis, it will be hard to be back on track + you won’t see any kind of result because your body will be on a pending mode; always trying to adjust to the new lifestyle. Stay focused on your GOAL.
Downsides
As every diet that has its own advantages and disadvantages, Keto had some negative impacts on my body. After 4 weeks of consuming only 30 gr of carbs per day, I decided to try a cookie. The second I ate ¼ of the cookie, I wanted to puke. My body was NOT accepting the processed sugar. I googled it and I found so many people getting trapped in the Keto diet and after many years they couldn’t even taste a pizza, because their body was rejecting any type of carbs.
After losing 6kg, I decided to increase my carb intake to 60 gr/day. I felt a bit better, and I could eat some dark chocolate (99%) here and there.
Another downside of the Keto diet was that as I was losing weight, my skin was loosening too. I was not feeling physically strong enough and I didn’t really have any kind of muscles. The positive aspect was that after 3 days in gym, my body started to tone up and my first baby abs showed up.
From my personal experience, I would recommend going to the gym after the first 2 weeks of Keto. In this way you will continue to lose weight and tone up your body at the same time.

I will do it again.
