How keto changed my life
Like me, you didn't understand what the ketogenic diet was until recently (like when Keto in Five came out).
I could have given you 20 different answers to the question What's the keto diet?
And not one of them would have been accurate or helpful.
My purpose with this post is to give people the Cliff Notes version of what it's like to go from eating traditionally to eating keto.
But before we dive into how my life changed, let's look at why you might consider trying this diet yourself.
My Ketogenic Journey – The Beginning
When I first started a Keto diet, it was hard for me to give up carbs entirely. That being said, I wasn't eating very many anyways (I ate more like 80/20), and I didn't eat sugar either.
So, I would still have one carb meal per week. The great thing about a Keto diet is eating more fat.
For example, one of my favorite meals is eggs cooked in coconut oil with some avocado slices on top and bacon crumbles sprinkled on top! How amazing does that sound?
I lost weight immediately.
One of the keto's biggest perks was that I started losing weight almost immediately.
I also noticed my sweet cravings had disappeared, so when I did choose to eat something high in sugar, I didn't feel guilty about it.
Though there is no scientific evidence to back up that claim, ketogenic dieters commonly report decreases in appetite and cravings after switching to a low-carb way of eating.
This is likely due to increased blood lipids (the good kind) thanks to an increase in good fats on a very low-carb diet.
I stopped craving sugar.
Many people report feeling less hunger while following a ketogenic diet, so that you may see similar results.
But it's not just your stomach that will be affected—research suggests that eating a high-fat diet can also improve your mood and mental performance. Plus, those benefits come without restricting calories or experiencing hunger pangs.
Once you start eating according to your body's natural appetite, you may experience improved energy levels, better physical performance, and increased muscle mass.
My skin cleared up
I have struggled with mild adult acne for a couple of years now.
It's gotten better and worse over time, but one of the things that made it worse was how many carbs I was eating.
When I started a ketogenic diet, my skin cleared up almost completely within a month and has stayed clear since.
Anecdotally speaking, I think it's safe to say that others can likely find relief from acne by reducing their carb intake as well!

I have more energy than ever before
I remember dreading long hikes with friends during high school because I was constantly exhausted after 10 minutes.
Fast forward to now, and I can go on all-day treks without breaking a sweat.
When you're in ketosis, your body switches from burning carbohydrates for energy to burning fat—which is why it's so easy to have more energy (and longer-lasting) than you ever imagined possible.
In addition, when your body burns fat for fuel, you produce more Adenosine Triphosphate (ATP), which boosts cellular metabolism and strengthens muscles and tissues.
So not only do I get enough energy to finish a 5k these days, but I feel healthier overall.
My stomach is flatter than it's ever been
When I first started a ketogenic diet, I wasn't sure what to expect.
I was convinced that it wouldn't work at all.
After all, I tried every other diet in existence, and they failed me miserably.
Yet here I am after having been on a Ketogenic diet for over two years now, and let me tell you that my body has never looked better in my entire life!
Sure, it may have taken me a few months to get used to it, but I've lost about 70 pounds of pure fat ever since then!
My stomach is flatter than ever, even when I was still younger.
My workouts are better than ever before
Because of carbohydrate restriction and ketones themselves, I find that I have more energy and endurance when exercising.
Being in a state of ketosis – as I would be while on a Ketogenic diet – gives you a rush of beta-hydroxybutyrate (BHB) – which is like rocket fuel for your muscles! BHB triggers an anti-inflammatory response that helps with recovery from intense exercise.
On top of that, it gives you more physical stamina for working out. It's pretty magical stuff!
My joints are no longer sore.
Every time I would run, I'd wake up sore and stiff in places that shouldn't hurt.
I couldn't run consistently or complete a workout because of my knees, hips, and back pain.
After being on keto for a few months, all that has gone away! Even better is that it has improved other things about my health: most noticeably, sleep quality and energy levels during the day.
Those two improvements alone are worth giving up carbs for. Keto has given me a new lease on life—and running!
I finally know what whole feels like!
I recently started a Keto diet, and I'm never going back.
It feels so good to know that I'm eating foods that will give me energy throughout the day and allow me to live my active lifestyle.
Who knew that something so simple could change everything? Now I can spend more time with my family and on my health.
This is an excellent diet for anyone who wants to keep their body healthy to do more of what they love in life! Keto is just what I needed!
