8 Best Questions to Ask the Tarot

Get quality answers from your tarot deck

By auraborrowsPublished 4 years ago 4 min read

One of the main questions I get as a tarot reader is "what should I ask the cards?" While your connection to your personal tarot deck may be different from the next person's, there are some great questions worth asking that will help you to narrow down what you want to ask of your cards. If you're interested in learning how to bond with your tarot, keep an eye out for our article on how to connect with your tarot deck.

Below are some great questions and suggested spreads to try with your cards. These spreads are meant to help you see things from an outside or less biased point of view, but they can also just be the opening question for your reading. If something comes up that brings another question to light, pursue it!

1. What do I need to focus on in my life at this time?

suggested spread

This is a great way to get a general reading if you're overwhelmed, or just feel bored in your day-to-day life. If you feel drawn to the cards then there may be something your subconscious mind wants you to remember and focus on. This spread helps you get right to the point, plus it gives you a bit more perspective on how something in your life may be affecting in ways you didn't realize.

2. What is something important to my understanding of a situation that I may have overlooked?

suggested spread

It can be easy to get tunnel vision when we are deeply involved in something, but the cards can help us consider things that may have been overlooked, dismissed, or we are shielding ourselves from. If you choose to do this spread to get to see all influences and perspectives, be ready to face the things you may have tucked into the back of your mind because they are a bit harder to consider as possibilities.

3. What life lesson can I take away from my current situation?

suggested spread

There are some situations that put us through the ringer, but there are often some great lessons to be learned through the stresses of our lives. With this spread you can see things from a birds eye view and take a step back. Asking what ways in which your growth may be difficult while facing the challenges of your current situation prepares you to catch any moments that may create delays. What did you learn about yourself, others, and the situation through your experience? This spread will break it down for you!

4. What skills and which people can I rely on or be supported by at this time in my life?

suggested spread

If you're asking the cards for help, then you might be able to find it in other places too. This spread helps you to figure out someone in your life that can support you with their own wisdom, experience, or skill. It also helps to remind you of your own resources and inner power and how you can harness it for the situation.

5. What timeline can I expect _________ to happen?

suggested spread

If you are just dying to know how things will unfold regarding a job, relationship, or anything you have to wait for, this is a great spread to give you a little glimpse. While it doesn't always reveal everything (because some things are meant to be unexpected) It can prepare you with a potential time frame. When asking "how long will this take to come to be?" consider the suit of the cards:

Wands: Days/Spring

Swords: Weeks/Autumn

Cups: Months/Summer

Pentacles: Years/Winter

If you get a Major Arcana in this position, consider what it means individually. If it is something like Temperance, Wheel of Fortune, or The Hanged Man, for example, it may indicate that you're meant to wait or learn something in the waiting period. It may not come to fruition until you've learned the necessary lesson. (You could pull another card at this point to see what the lesson would be!)

6. What should I consider when making a decision about _____?

suggested spread

Decision making can be daunting, so this spread helps you to keep balanced and look at things critically for any outcome you may encounter.

7. How can I best align with my higher self/goals/future?

suggested spread

Your higher self, future, and goals are constantly evolving as you are, but sometimes it is helpful to check in and see how we can move toward being the next version of ourselves. With this spread you can see the things holding you back from reaching goals you may have set, and you can see the ways in which you can bring new meaning into your life to align with who you are becoming.

8. How can I best nurture my inner child?

suggested spread

Lastly, nurturing your inner child is a great way to enhance your relationship with yourself, which is one of the best uses for tarot card readings.

As mentioned before, these are just suggested spreads to get you started. If something comes up in your reading that you want to explore deeper, go for it! These are just jumping off points to help you narrow down your thoughts and understand what it is you really want to know and see.
