5 Microhabits That Will Completely Transform Your Life This Year
You may know these habits, but it’s time to take action.
It’s the small habits.
How you spend your mornings.
How you talk to yourself.
What you read and what you watch.
Who you share your energy with.
Who has access to you.
That will change your life.
— Michael Tonge
People always think that a small change won’t make a big difference. Suppose you think like that tiny change cannot have a massive impact on your life. Let me tell you, you are mistaken.
Here are the top micro habits I incorporated into my life that you should practice. I can guarantee you a massive positive change in your life.
All you have to do is start tiny! Let’s dig deep into the micro habits.
1- Fix things right away
Make this habit of fixing things right away. Do your chores and if something is broken around the house, make it a priority to fix it. Here are a couple of ideas.
- Clean regularly, home, car, office desk
- Prioritize healthy cooking if you need to buy a healthy grocery, buy right away
- If a bill is due, pay right away.
All I’m saying is always be ready to take action. But it doesn’t mean if you need to fix the broken car, you just go ahead and start fixing it. Use common sense, the things which are under your control, or you have the skill set to do it.
That brings me to the next point, the 2-minutes rule.
2-Incorporate 2 minutes rule
If it takes less than two minutes, then do it now. — David Allen
I can understand it’s tough to overcome laziness but not impossible. We have to train our brain by continuously saying that if it takes less than two minutes — do it now.
For example, I started to make this habit by making my bed. The first thing I do before even going to the washroom to make my bed from the past couple of years. Now my brain unconsciously knows that it takes less than two minutes. There is no harm to do it now.
Here is a couple of things you can start to make it a sustainable habit.
- Make bed first thing in the morning
- Start reading merely one page a day that won’t take more than 2 minutes
- Empty a trash can
- Put paper in the recycling bin
- give food to your dog/cat
- put a dish into the dishwasher
- Fold laundry, even a pair of socks
3-Read more — a lot more
The 2 minutes rule will help you to build momentum. All you need to do is start reading for 2 minutes and build your attention span.
Reading is one of the best tiny habits you can build this year to learn more and make your life happier. You will not see, not a single one, a successful person who does not read.
I wrote a detailed article on why successful people, Oprah, Bill Gates, Elon Musk, Warren Buffett, love the 5-hour rule.
4-Recipe for burnout
You have to learn to say no. No, without feeling guilty. Setting boundaries is healthy. You need to learn to respect and take care of yourself.
Many of us are reluctant to say no to others. And it’s not easy to say no, especially at work. I also believe that saying no is tricky.
You need to learn the art of saying no. I read this great article on Harvard Business Review — learn when to say no.
From experience, I can say that it’s super easy to say yes to your boss and colleagues, but that’s the recipe for burnout in the long run.
Just say no!
5- Drink more water
Drinking water is like washing out your insides. The water will cleanse the system, fill you up, decrease your caloric load and improve the function of all your tissues. — Kevin R. Stone
I am not going to say that you need to drink a gallon of water every single day. Just start small; what about an extra glass of water each day or maybe before each meal.
As soon as you build that habit into your system, what about adding another glass of water? Just think about the domino effect.
Bottom line
To build good habits or change the bad ones is not going to happen in a day. We need to repeatedly do the same task to make it part of our life.
All we have to do is start tiny. If I can do it, you can do it.
I can guarantee you that your life will be drastically changed if you implement the following microhabitats in your daily life.
- Apply the 2 minutes rule
- Fix things right away if you have the skills to do it
- Build a reading habit
- Learn how to say no
- drink more water
