5 Healthy Weight Loss Tips To Try Out for the Holidays

Support your goals throughout the holiday season.

By Paisley HansenPublished 5 years ago 3 min read

The holidays can make losing weight difficult. Between parties, treats and added stress, you may find yourself indulging more often than normal. Try incorporating these simple weight loss tips into your everyday routine to help support your goals throughout the holiday season.

1. Start the Day off With a Healthy Breakfast

The old adage that breakfast is the most important meal of the day may not be true for everyone, but there is evidence that eating a satisfying meal to start the day can help you achieve weight loss goals. A healthy breakfast is not a free pass to eat whatever you want throughout the day, but this way, even if your eating goes downhill by mid-afternoon, you know you got at least one nutritious meal right off the bat.

Find a few meal options that are easy to prepare and fill you up for at least a few hours for the best results. Overnight oats are a great option that you can dress up with protein-rich nut milk or greek yogurt and fresh fruit. Many dieters wonder is oatmeal good for weight loss. Luckily, the whole grains and fiber fill you up and help give you a boost of energy for several hours. Whole grain toast with avocado slices or hard-boiled eggs are also great choices.

2. Sneak Exercise Into Everyday Activities

You know that increased exercise is a solid component of any weight loss routine. After all, you want to expend more calories than you take in to drop those extra pounds. Unfortunately, busy schedules around the holidays often mean fewer trips to the gym for exercise sessions. That doesn't mean you have to skip exercising altogether, though. There are plenty of ways you can sneak physical activity into everyday activities. A few ideas to get you started include:

  • Taking the stairs instead of an elevator
  • Parking further away at shopping centers and work
  • Walking or riding a bike for local trips
  • Using a portable stepper while watching your favorite shows
  • Dancing to favorite music while you clean the house

3. Find a Way to Manage Stress

Stress can quickly sap your energy and make it hard to stick with a diet or weight loss plan. It also alters how your body reacts to stimuli, including the food you consume, and can lower your ability to fight off infection. Luckily, there are plenty of things you can do to reduce stress in a healthful way.

CBD products have been shown to reduce stress and promote calm. It is incredibly easy to incorporate into your daily routine and can help you combat the increased stress that pops up around the holidays. Exercise can also lower stress levels. As you work out, your body alters its chemical production and releases endorphins that promote happiness. Specific activities like yoga and Tai Chi also incorporate mindfulness to help you relax and find a calm center.

4. Limit How Much Alcohol You Drink

Alcohol consumption often increases around the holidays. Whether you are simply attending more parties or the stress of visiting with extended family leaves you looking for a way to take the edge off, alcohol is not your friend when you are trying to lose weight. Alcohol is a source of empty calories that can add significantly to your daily intake. Drinking also lowers your inhibitions. This can lead to poor food choices or binge eating. It's probably fine to have a glass of wine at dinner but limit yourself to no more than one drink per day to keep your weight loss on track during the holiday season.

5. Eat Before You Head to Holiday Parties

Speaking of holiday parties, they can be a dieter's worst nightmare. To avoid overeating or indulging in the tables of treats, eat a sensible meal before you head out. This way you can honestly tell your host you are full without detailing your diet plans. It also lets you have a few bites of the things you really enjoy without feeling guilty.

Making healthy choices like increasing exercise, limiting alcohol and eating a balanced breakfast can help you maintain weight loss goals throughout the holidays.
