When most people think of yoga, they picture a room full of women in stretchy pants, contorting their bodies into impossible positions. While that may be one type of yoga, it's not the only kind. In fact, there are many different types of yoga, and each one offers its own unique set of benefits.

I always knew there was more to yoga that what I found in a yoga studio. Recently I did a yoga training that blew my mind. Here are 10 things I learned.

10 Things I learned from doing a yoga training

1. The power of the mind-body connection. Doing a yoga teacher training showed me how powerful and meaningful it is to bring together the physical and mental aspects of yoga practice. I learned to cultivate awareness within my body, while also connecting to my thoughts, emotions, and intentions.

2. How to find balance in life. A yoga teacher training taught me ways to prioritize health, happiness, and self-care in order to live a balanced lifestyle. I now understand that balance doesn't mean doing everything perfectly all at once—it's about finding equilibrium between work, rest, play, and other activities that bring joy into our lives.

3. The importance of community. Being part of a yoga teacher training gave me the opportunity to learn from and gain support from a group of like-minded individuals, which was invaluable. I learned about the power of having positive relationships with peers and mentors, and how it can be a great source of strength for personal growth.

4. The value of reflection. Doing a yoga teacher training encouraged me to go within and explore my inner world through meditation, journaling, and other reflective practices. This inspired me to become even more mindful in my daily life, discovering what works best for me while letting go of anything that doesn't serve my highest good.

5. Becoming an observer of yourself. As part of the yoga teacher training, I learned how to observe myself without judgment or attachment—just noticing what is without trying to make it anything else. This has helped me to better understand my thoughts, feelings, and reactions, so that I can make conscious choices in how I respond to situations.

6. Connecting with your own practice. Being part of a yoga teacher training gave me the chance to truly connect with my own practice. By exploring different poses and styles of yoga, I found out which ones resonated most deeply with me, allowing me to deepen my physical and spiritual connection with myself.

7. Learning about anatomy and alignment. During my yoga teacher training, I was introduced to the basics of anatomy and alignment principles that are essential for safe practice—both for myself and for those who might attend my classes. This gave me a much richer understanding of the body and how to move within it in ways that feel good and bring healing.

8. Working with props. I learned the importance of using props when necessary during yoga practice, such as blocks, straps, blankets, and bolsters, so that everyone can have an accessible and enjoyable experience regardless of their mobility level.

9. Building confidence in teaching. Doing a yoga teacher training helped me gain confidence in leading classes or workshops because I was able to practice my skills under the guidance of experienced teachers who provided feedback and support along the way.

10. Connecting with something bigger than yourself. At its core, doing a yoga teacher training showed me how powerful connection can be. I learned that yoga isn't just a physical practice—it's also a way to connect with something greater than ourselves, allowing us to open our hearts and minds to new possibilities.
