Everyone wants to have beautiful, clear skin, but it can be difficult to maintain when your hormones are out of balance or when you’re dealing with a case of acne or eczema.
Luckily, whether you’re prone to acne or already have a rash skin, by eating the right foods, you can enjoy the glow of perfect skin! Here are 10 foods that will help you achieve clearer, healthier skin in a minimum time.
Note: You may find it a bit too "science-y"; so feel free to just skim through the list :)
1) Sweet Potato
We all know what a sweet potato is, but you might not know how great it is for your skin. This delicious vegetable contains various vitamins which helps repair damaged skin cells and prevent acne breakouts. With its abundance of beta-carotene and vitamins A, C, E, B6 and B12, sweet potato is chock full of antioxidants that help clear your skin. When added to a diet rich in leafy greens, carrots and squash, sweet potato can efficiently help fight acne. If you want to boost your body’s natural ability to clear up your complexion, eat more of these tasty treats!
2) Green Tea
Green tea is also a proven diuretic, helping to flush excess water from your system. If you’re feeling puffy and bloated, a cup of green tea can help cut back on any bloat. Green tea helps boost metabolism by increasing resting energy expenditure (REE) which in turn causes an increase in fat burning during workouts. It should be noted that while making green tea, most varieties taste great with honey or lemon; just be sure not to add sugar! I like mine with a little bit of raw milk and sometimes honey.
3) Avocados
While avocados are high in fat, they’re also rich in nutrients that promote clear skin, including vitamin E and omega-9 fatty acids. With all of these benefits, it’s no wonder that some people claim guacamole is a magic potion for clear skin. Eating an avocado frequently can help protect your face from wrinkles and slow down aging. So, include avocados as a regular part of your diet to get clearer skin.
4) Broccoli
This cruciferous veggie is packed with vitamin C and sulfur. Sulfur helps cleanse toxins from your liver, which can improve breakouts as well as overall skin health. You can enjoy broccoli raw in salads or steamed as a side dish. Tossing chopped broccoli into a salad will help you reap its benefits without even noticing it’s there.
5) Eggs
Eggs: One of nature’s perfect foods, eggs are one of the top superfood choices for many dieticians. Eggs contain cysteine, an amino acid that helps repair and regenerate damaged skin cells, which is particularly helpful for those with acne or psoriasis. Eating one egg per day will provide enough cysteine to get your skin looking healthy and glowing again. Other protein-rich foods like fish, legumes, and nuts will have similar effects.
6) Fish
Omega-3s are an essential nutrient for a healthy, clear complexion. Fish—especially wild salmon and sardines—contain plenty of these critical fatty acids. Aim to eat fish at least twice a week to reap their skin-clearing benefits. Good sources of omega-3s include: wild salmon, sardines, herring, anchovies, and trout. Grass-fed beef is also a good source, although it doesn’t contain as much of these essential fats as fish do.
7) Carrots
Carrots are full of Vitamin A, which helps support skin health by supporting your body’s natural oil balance. It’s also packed with vitamin C and beta-carotene (the precursor to vitamin A), which also helps to reduce inflammation. They’re also high in Vitamin K, a nutrient that promotes blood circulation and improves blood flow—both crucial factors in glowing, radiant skin. Finally, they’re a good source of potassium—which supports water balance in our bodies and therefore hydrated (and supple) looking skin.
8) Almonds
Almonds are a great source of vitamin E, which can help strengthen your skin. They also contain copper, an essential mineral that helps heal wounds and scars on your body. It’s a good idea to eat one or two servings of almonds every day. While you should be eating almonds for their benefits, it doesn’t hurt that they taste great too!
9) Oatmeal
Oatmeal is not only rich in soluble fiber but also packed with zinc, which helps calm skin irritations and redness. A 2004 study from Japan’s Kitasato University Medical School found that acne sufferers who ate a daily bowl of oatmeal for three months experienced a significant reduction in pimple size and severity. Grains are gluten-free and low in fat, making them great for anyone trying to lose weight. Oats have been shown to reduce cholesterol levels and improve heart health as well.
10) Walnuts
Walnuts contain Vitamin E, which can protect your skin against free radicals and inflammation. These little nuts are also packed with omega-3 fatty acids, which help promote collagen production to keep your skin smooth and bright. Eating a handful of walnuts every day will keep your skin protected from environmental pollutants like cigarette smoke.
