Why being Decisive Can be the Best Decision You Make?
The Decisive Habit

People who stay in the middle ground get run over. I've come to learn this. Forming the habit of making decisions in a wise and timely manner is vital to our peace and success.
However, some people make some decisions too quickly, while others make them too slowly, some make them unwisely, and some don't make them at all.
Life is filled with decisions. We decide decisions daily.
We decide:
- What we wear.
- What we eat.
- How late we sleep.
- What we do with our free time.
We make big decisions and small decisions including employment, relationship, financial or even religious decisions.
What I have found that most fulfilled and happy people have in common is the ability to be decisive and make timely decisions in a wise manner. Fortune 500 executives, leaders, business owners, entrepreneurs, all need to make wise decisions in a timely manner if they want to succeed and get ahead. Offers and deals are often time-sensitive and require a response promptly for the deal to go through.
The Misery of Indecision
Personally, I am a decisive person. However, I can be guilty of making decisions too quickly. I have done so in the past and have regretted it. Even as a decisive person, I find myself irresolute between two choices and having difficulty settling on one compared to the other.
Mostly because I would second guess myself and wonder if it was the right call.
Here is what I realise:
It's impossible to learn to make good decisions without having the experience of making decisions.
We make the right ones and the wrong ones in the process of learning. Thomas Edison failed more than 10,000 times before inventing the lightbulb. Michael Jordan Missed over 9000 shots at goal (again more shots than an average NBA player even takes).
Growing up there were rules in my household, gradually as we got older my parents entrusted my sibling and me with more decision making power, trusting that we had learned what they wanted us to and that discernment and wisdom will be the guiding tool as we navigate adulthood.
Don't be afraid to Make Decisions
One thing I've learned is not to be afraid to make decisions. If we make a decision that turns out wrong, we can modify it as we go along. Sometimes you might feel as though you are getting lost as you travel through life, never give up on finding the right path back.
How to Make Decisions
Here is some practical advice:
1. Make a list of your options.
- How many different ways can this go?
For eg, if you change your job, what are your options? Do you change careers or get a job within the field you are in?
- Another eg, you have a free day what should you do?
- You could finish a project you started but have yet to complete.
- You could go shopping and have lunch with your friends.
- You could catch up with your family on Facetime/ Skype.
- You could lie at home all day on your couch and watch Netflix.
What's the best thing to do?
Truthfully, only you can answer that.
You might have more fun hanging out with your friends shopping and eating but you might have more long term peace if you finish your project. If you are wise with your time, you could finish your project, get a workout in and meet your friends after a long day. Lying on the couch all day probably isn't the best option as you might most likely end up feeling tired and as if you've wasted a whole day.
From a financial perspective
If you want something you can buy it and have it, or not buy it and keep your money. Which of the two options best suits you?
For example, you might give up vacation temporarily if you and your spouse are saving up on a deposit of a house. Or you may decide to spend less on yourself if you want to put more money into your side hustle business.
Your time
How about your time? Do you honestly have enough time to give to it without it overloading on your schedule?
Are you saying yes to something someone else wants you to do but you would rather not do?
Always think of the outcome of every decision or you will regret the decision you make.
Conclusion
Lastly, always have a plan and be ready to change it if life happens. It is possible to plan too much, but not planning at all is the seed for a wasted life.
Set your mind and keep them set, you will be amazed at how much better off you are when you make the decisions for your life.
