When Knowledge Becomes a Lifeline: Thanking Our Local Fire Safety Experts

Honoring the Heroes Who Keep Our Homes, Workplaces and Communities Safe

By Deborah LarsonPublished 2 months ago 3 min read

My name is Deborah Larson. Living in Florida with my two children feels like a blessing every day. We have a beautiful home with a swimming pool. Additionally, we are surrounded by a peaceful neighborhood and supportive people.

As a single mother, I carry the full responsibility of raising my kids alone.

Meet My Sons

My youngest son is Joey. He is 11 years old and full of energy. However, he battles asthma every day.

My older child is Christopher. He is 17 years old. Furthermore, he is mature and protective. He often acts like a second guardian in our house.

Between school schedules, bills, and planning their future, everything I do is for them.

A Regular Evening Turned Into a Nightmare

Sometimes, life becomes very hard to predict. You never know what could happen at any time. I learned this the hard way in September. Let me retell the entire ordeal.

Dinner and Work

On September 13, 2025, we had an early dinner at 7:49 PM. I needed to rush back to my office for urgent client project queries. Therefore, we ate early.

By 8:23 PM, I had put both Christopher and Joey to sleep. After that, I quietly left home. I had already asked my neighbors to check in occasionally for security purposes.

Everything was fine until suddenly, it wasn't.

The Call That Changed Everything

While in the middle of a meeting, my phone kept ringing. When I finally answered, my neighbor sounded terrified.

"Deborah, there's a fire coming from your house! The smoke is everywhere!"

My heart dropped. I froze and could not think clearly. My clients immediately helped calm me down. They reminded me to call emergency services.

When I called, I was informed that the nearest fire units were responding to another emergency. As a result, they would take time to reach my house.

Speeding Home in Panic

I rushed out of the office. Traffic felt endless and unforgiving. While driving, a notification popped up. It was a fire alarm alert from home. I opened the camera feed.

What I Saw on Camera

I saw Christopher and Joey awake. They were struggling to escape through thick smoke.

Joey, being asthmatic, appeared weak and in distress. Meanwhile, Christopher was covering both their faces with a cloth to avoid smoke inhalation. He was trying to guide Joey out.

Then suddenly, the camera feed went blank.

No visuals. No sound. Only silence.

That silence felt like a nightmare.

The Scene When I Arrived

When I finally reached home, flames were everywhere. The walls, roof, and windows were burning. In addition, fire trucks and ambulances surrounded the house. The smell of burnt wood filled the air. Then I saw my family.

My Sons Were Safe

Christopher and Joey were sitting inside an ambulance.

Joey was receiving oxygen support. Meanwhile, Christopher had burn injuries on his hands but remained conscious and alert.

They were safe. That was all that mattered.

How They Escaped

Christopher told me they remembered a fire safety awareness event at school last year. The event was conducted by Serviced Fire Equipment. During that event, the staff taught everyone how to use a fire extinguisher and handle emergency situations effectively.

Using that knowledge, they slowed the fire long enough to exit safely.

Christopher burned his hand when a wooden beam collapsed. Nevertheless, his quick thinking saved both of them. It likely saved Joey's life.

That conversation left me speechless, proud, and grateful.

A Visit to Say Thank You

When the dust settled, I went down myself to their headquarters. I visited Serviced Fire Equipment to thank them for teaching students like my Sons, Christopher and Joey.

I didn’t think a simple ‘thank you’ was enough to show my appreciation. So I told them how the training they gave them had enabled my kids to save their own lives.

They replied so courteously, very humbly. They said it was their duty to spread awareness for the safety of the public. Secondly, they said, saving lives was why they exist, even if it's indirectly.

Their words stayed with me. They reminded me that not all heroes wear uniforms on the front lines. Sometimes, they are the ones who show us that tragedy can be averted before it occurs.

What This Taught Me

This incident changed everything. I learned that there are things that should never be ignored as a part of our fire emergency protocol:

  • Children should be taught how to use a fire extinguisher.
  • Homes should have emergency exit plans.
  • Fire safety education should never be ignored.

A house can be rebuilt. However, lives cannot.
