What You Need to Know About Stone Flowers
How to grow and maintain them
If you are looking for a low garden flower that will spread on the ground, we have the best solution for you.
The stone flower (Portulaca Grandiflora) - or portulaca in popular terms - is a flower native to Brazil, Argentina, and Uruguay and can grow in our country.
Portolacul is very easy to grow and maintain and looks great in the garden, with other taller flowers or surrounded by grass and other garden decorations, such as those made of stone.
However, raising and maintaining it involves some simple rules, but these should not be ignored. Find out below what they are!
How to grow stone flowers
Portulaca tolerates many types of soil, but it grows very well in sandy, dry, where it can be full of sun. These plants are excellent for arid areas and last a long time without water.
You also don't have to plant them every year, because they spread by themselves. You may even need to take measures to control the spread of the root ball, as it may invade other areas of your garden.
It doesn't take much water for stone flowers to survive the summer. The shape of this plant retains moisture very well and for this reason watering can be done less often.
But be careful how you water, because they are quite fragile plants! Try to water them as close to the root as possible and avoid strong jets.
How to plant a stone flower
Planting this flower is very easy. You don't even need to cover the seeds with soil, just press them on loose soil and water them. These seeds need the sun to sprout and grow.
Even if there are stones in your garden, you shouldn't bother to put them aside. The stone flowers love the slightly arid environment and can also make their way among the rocks.
Plant the holm oak in spring (March-April), after thawing, when the soil is still full of water and warm from the sun's rays. The seeds are planted at a distance of at least 20 cm so that the plant has a place to grow. Planting in pots can also be done in April-May.
Portulaca can bring life to your flower garden or it can be easily integrated into certain landscapes with old structures or stone paths.
These plants grow even in cracks or where there is a small amount of soil. Portulaca is available in many colors, from pink and red to shades of yellow, orange, dark lavender, cream, and white.
How to take care of stone flowers
Although this plant does not need a large amount of water, it is still important to water it every few days when you notice that the soil is dry. Water the plant with a weak jet, near the root and be careful not to spill on the flowers, as they may be buried in the ground or break.
If you want to enjoy these wonderful flowers, it is advisable to remove the flowers when you notice that they have dried. In this way, other buds will appear, which will bloom until autumn. This flower does not withstand low temperatures and dries when it is less than 5 degrees Celsius.
These beautiful flowers usually attract butterflies due to their vibrant colors and are the main attraction of any garden. They can be planted both in pots and directly in the garden soil. They can also be grown as a potted plant.
The only thing you need to pay attention to when planting the stone flower is that it spreads very easily. So be careful where you plant it, but also how you prevent it from spreading. Some plants can be suffocated by portulaca and die!
