What is EOV (Ecological Outcome Verification) and how does it work?

Regenerative Agriculture

By Wayne PorteousPublished 5 years ago 3 min read

Regenerative Agriculture is the leading environmental issue of the moment and is attracting growing media attention. But how are we to know the land they are using for growing and grazing is regenerating?

A global verification programme has been developed to accurately verify for farmers and consumers that the land they use is scientifically proven to be regenerating. EOV or Ecological Outcome Verification focuses on the health of the land, it’s biodiversity and the surrounding ecosystem.

What is EOV?

A system needed to be developed to measure whether practises were ensuring that soil was becoming healthier and thus creating longer-lasting farms.

Rather than being a certification of practises, EOV is a measure and verification of outcomes in soil and farm ecosystems, and thus it doesn’t state that things should be done in a certain way, but rather gives the farmer a way of measuring what he is doing, is really working.

EOV gives a voice to the land through measurable and tangible results keeping you on your challenge, to maintain a sustainable and truly regenerative farming practice.

The Aims of EOV

The long-term aim of the EOV approach is regeneration; however before we get there, we need to make the land more sustainable, in short the soil needs to be regenerating.

Modern farming has been built on an extraction model, take, take, take. The topsoil has been damaged to the point that it can no longer sustain life and is totally inhospitable to grow pasture, plants or vegetables.

The world has a rapidly growing crisis with the prediction that if the current rates of soil degradation continue all the world’s topsoil may disappear within 60 years.

How does EOV work?

EOV measures the health of the land as a living system in its entirety, measuring not only soil health, but also the health of flora and fauna and how all these things work together in totality - the ecosystem.

The EOV system has been years in the making with contributions from scientists, agronomists and agriculturalists from all around the world. It comes with a high degree of scientific rigour and is on track to become one of the largest global databases for monitoring pasture health and associated ecosystem services around the world.

New Zealand has been added to the world ecosystems, from the South African veld and the Texas prairie to the Argentine pampas and Australian grasslands amongst others.

Farms with positively trending data receive Ecological Outcome Verification which authenticates their produce from their operations to consumers.

Land to Market

The attitude of world consumers is changing and people are becoming much more concerned about the environment and in particular, whether the food that they eat has been produced in a sustainable manner.

Using the EOV method consumers can ascertain what the products impact was on the environment with evidence available to endorse it.

The Land to Market programme allows a connection between producers and consumers acting as the world’s first regenerative verification and sourcing solution. This means that people will be able to check exactly where their food has come from, sometimes right down to the individual field and whether the farm practised sustainable, regenerative agriculture.

Farmers producing food in the right sustainable manner will be well favoured by the cohort of consumers, restaurants, distributors and food manufacturers.

Why should you sign up?

EVO is primarily for farmers. The method gives farmers actual, verifiable feedback on what’s working and what’s not enabling them to take remedial action when required with their land and livestock.

EOV helps farmers understand plant litter incorporation, dung decomposition, soil capping and it records the presence of desirable plant species. These reports contain insights regarding improved food security, better water retention and crucially enhance effective carbon sequestration.

These real-time reports to farmers drive positive changes at the micro-level and without these small sequential improvements at the farm level, these valuable improvements are not possible.

Join the farming revolution today.

Regeneration is the hot subject of conversation in farming circles around the world. Farmers are better informed than anyone on the state of the land and they know that their practises have to change and the sooner the better.

Instead of bleeding the land until it dies, squeezing the life out of the soil until it dries up and blows away, we must look after it and nurse it back to health.

The natural cycle of birth growth and death which had worked over the eons of time has been broken by man’s greed in just over a couple of centuries, however it’s not too late to alter the degradation; we can reverse the harm that’s been done.

Regenerative farming with EOV as the scientific backbone can help metamorphose large and small farms into effective, productive and principled success stories, which in turn will mean more and more agricultural producers around the world will be coming on board.
