Tips for Successful Spring Cleaning

Spring Cleaning

By Ryan EganPublished 5 years ago 3 min read

Spring cleaning is what we have recognised as the thorough cleaning of properties in the home or anywhere else. It is usually carried out in the spring period, hence the name. However, you do not have to wait until spring before you start cleaning. You can do the cleaning as soon as you have the time to do it. Besides the thorough cleaning that comes with spring cleaning, other benefits are attached to it, such as strengthening the immune system and avoiding illness. If you feel the spring cleaning may be too much for you, you can always contact a professional cleaning company for help.

Getting started

The first thing you need to do before you start cleaning each room is de-clutter or removing items from the room. Ideally, you should get three containers for this. One container would be to put in things you wish to throw away, another for putting things you wish to recycle or donate, and the last container to put things you want to sell. The things that you want to retain or keep should be kept in a different room or place.

After de-cluttering, the next thing to do would be to make a plan. Make a list of all the rooms and areas in your home and cross the jobs off as you complete them. This will help you know the areas you have completed and the ones you are yet to work on. Also, make sure that you have all you need to clean in one place so you won’t have to run back and forth to get stuff.

Cleaning tips for bedrooms

Start with the wardrobe, and remove items of clothing that have not worn in the last 12 months. Get boxes and label them, as it will help you arrange and put away clothes you won’t be needing for a while, like winter clothes. Begin by dusting and cleaning surfaces like the ceiling. Start with the ceiling so that the dust can fall, and they will be removed later.

Next, dust the lampshades, mirrors, tabletops and other surfaces. Remove photos and pictures that are hanging on the wall and clean them before hanging them back. Also, clean the windows and skirting boards.

When it comes to the mattress, use the upholstery attachment on the vacuum cleaner and vacuum both sides thoroughly. You can also use a homemade solution of essential oil like lavender or chamomile, mixed with bicarbonate soda and sprinkle over the mattress. Let it sit for an hour and then vacuum again. Wash the bed linen on a hot water cycle.

Cleaning tips for kitchens

You should also start with the ceiling in this area. Remove all dirt, dust and lose particles using a handheld vacuum. Wipe down the walls with a microfibre cloth and warm water. Empty all the drawers and cupboards and wipe them out. Use a drawer liner to keep the interiors of the drawers fresh.

Clean all the surfaces with an anti-bacterial spray, and also clean the appliances inside and out. Tackle the windows and the sills, and finish up by sweeping the floor and then mopping afterwards.

Finally, empty the dustbins, wash all the hand towels, put all cleaning cloths and dishcloths in a washing machine and complete a hot wash.

Cleaning tips for bathrooms

Start with the shower curtains; remove the curtains, towels, bathmats and blinds. Dust all the surfaces and sweep the hard floors. Wipe down the walls and scrub the shower, bathtub and sink basin.

Polish the mirrored surfaces, and clean the windows and sills. Disinfect the toilet, paying attention to the bowl as well as under the rim. Complete the cleaning by mopping or steam cleaning the hard floor.

Cleaning tips for carpets

To make things easier, you can get or hire a carpet cleaning machine. Also, you can apply anti-bacterial powder or a carpet spray to the carpets before vacuuming.

Cleaning tips for furniture

To clean your furniture, you would have to use fabric cleaning products designed for soft upholstered furnishing. To avoid damaging the fibre of the furniture, you are advised to follow the manufacturer’s instruction.
