Successful Sydney Landscaping in Winter
Keeping your landscape lush and vibrant is possible during the colder months of the year

As Sydney begins the transition through Autumn into Winter, like me, you might be anticipating cosy nights, hot chocolates, and comfy sweaters. As the leaves begin to fall and the temperature drops, you might think you can forget about your garden now that the sun isn’t scorching it. But your garden still needs some tender love and care, even in winter! Although it doesn’t get as cold in Sydney as it does in many other parts of the world, it’s still essential to prepare your garden for the cooler months and do some winter Sydney landscaping.
There is still plenty to do in your garden, even during the cooler months, especially if you want to keep it looking its best. And there are still flowers and vegetables that can be grown during winter! This article will examine some easy ways to keep your garden in tip-top condition this winter. I’ll also throw in a list of the best herbs, vegetables and shrubs that thrive during Sydney winters!
So if you want a garden that looks lush all winter long, keep reading!
Irrigation Check

One of the first things you want to do before winter arrives is take a look at your irrigation systems if you have them. During summer, your garden requires much more water than in winter, so it will be necessary to adjust your irrigation systems. This will ensure your plants are not overwatered as the temperature cools down.
If you don’t use irrigation systems and prefer to water your plants by hand, then just keep in mind that your plants will need less water during cooler weather.
Watch Out For Frost

Depending on where you live in Sydney, your garden might be at risk of experiencing a bit of frost during the winter months! Frost can have extremely damaging effects on your plants, even killing them off completely. So if you live in an area that can get frosty, then it’s super important to prepare your garden for this.
If your plants are in pots and are especially susceptible to frost, bring them inside during colder patches of weather. If you have a conservatory, you can put them in there. Otherwise, place them somewhere in your house that receives a decent amount of sunlight.
Non-native plants like hibiscus and bougainvillaea are sensitive to frost, as well as any other tropical plant. Some vegetable plants, such as pepper and tomato, are also sensitive to the cold. Any sensitive plants that can’t be taken inside can still be easily protected by placing a plastic covering over your plants overnight. Just make sure to remove the cover in the morning again so the plants can get warmed up in the sun!
Pruning
Winter is also an excellent time to get some pruning done! Plants such as roses, wisterias and hydrangeas all benefit from a good prune during the cooler months so that they can grow well again come spring.
Another important part of your winter Sydney landscaping is to ensure your properly prune your trees. Trees can become dormant during winter, and it’s important to prune them well to ensure they grow strong and healthy. Trees that are left for too long without pruning can cause growth problems, causing your trees to look less attractive! If you plan to do any tree pruning yourself, remember that height safety is vital. If your tree is higher than 2m, then attempting to climb ladders and prune it yourself could be dangerous. If you don’t have the correct training or equipment to work at height, you can always ask some local Sydney landscaping experts to come and safely take care of the tree for you!
Seasonal Clean Up
Wintertime in Sydney is also an ideal time to do a bit of tidying up, especially after the summer storms! Take a little time to clean up your outdoor space, picking up any fallen branches, leaves and other debris. You could also pressure wash your patio and any other paved area to get it all clean and ready for another year!
The cooler weather also gives you a great opportunity to spend some time landscaping your Sydney garden, so it looks good once the weather starts to heat up again.
Winter Pest control
It may be colder, but that doesn’t stop bugs and pests from doing their dirty work! There are considerably less pests around during winter, but still enough to do some damage to your garden, so make sure you keep an eye on it.
To help reduce the risk of disease, make sure your plants have adequate distance between each other with good air circulation to prevent fungus from growing. During cold spells, be careful not to water the leaves of your plant, as this can lead to excess moisture, which can also lead to disease. If you’re already having trouble with pests, you can look for an effective pesticide to get rid of them!
