Side Hustle
Should you start one? If you haven't already
In recent years, the concept of a "side hustle" has gained popularity as a way to earn extra income outside of traditional jobs, especially a 9-5. With everything going on in the world and especially with inflation, a side hustle just might be necessary. A side hustle is essentially any type of work or business that you engage in outside of your full-time job or primary source of income. It can be a part-time job, freelancing (e.g. Fiverr), selling products or services online (e.g. Etsy, Amazon FBA, Shopify, your own website), renting out space or assets (e.g. Airbnb), or starting a small business.
Advantages of a side hustle
There are many advantages to starting a side hustle. The most obvious benefit is the potential to earn additional income and increase your finances which can help you achieve your financial goals faster. Do you want to travel or take a vacation? Do you want to save for a down payment on a house? Do you want to finally get that 3–6-month emergency savings funded?
Additionally, a side hustle can offer flexibility and freedom, allowing you to work on your own terms and schedule. The sense of peace that you are in control of your time and schedule is indescribable. It can also help you develop new skills and grow as a person, and potentially even turn those skills into a full-time business. Was there something you wanted to learn that you think you could develop a passion for and what would be even better is to get paid for that new skill and interest?
Challenges of a side hustle
However, there are also challenges to starting a side hustle just like with anything else in life. One of the biggest challenges is managing your time and maintaining a work-life balance, especially if you have other responsibilities like family, friends, or hobbies. I'm a wife and a mother of 2, so having a balance is critical.
Additionally, starting a business or pursuing a new venture can come with financial risks and investment requirements. There are side hustles out there that don't require an initial investment but I'm going to be honest, it takes a lot of effort to get those types of side hustles generating consistent amount of money. If you know of some that takes zero to minimal amount of money with little to no effort, let me know! You may also face competition and market saturation, making it harder to build a customer base and generate income. In the end, a side hustle is not easy otherwise everyone would do it. It may not be easy but putting time, effort, and being determined to succeed, it can make it all worth it.
How to start a side hustle
If you're interested in starting a side hustle, there are several steps you can take to get started. First, evaluate your skills and interests to identify potential opportunities that align with your passions and goals. Next, research your options and identify niches or markets that are underserved. Develop a business plan and set goals to help guide your strategy and measure your progress. This step is CRITICAL: Take action and start building your business, whether it's creating a website, marketing your services, or reaching out to potential customers. Some people will waste time over planning and then never start or taking action. Take action and learn from your mistakes. You can pivot if you need to! Finally, remember to continuously evaluate and adjust your strategy as needed to optimize your results.
In conclusion, starting a side hustle can be a powerful way to achieve your financial and personal goals. Remember why you are starting a side hustle. While it can be challenging and require significant effort and time, the benefits can be well worth it. Whether you're looking for extra income, more flexibility, or the chance to pursue your passions, a side hustle can offer a path to your definition of success and fulfillment.
