Self-Defense Is Important, and Here's 3 Reasons Why

Defending Your Life

By Olivia PictonPublished 5 years ago 3 min read

While it's not the most pleasant thing to think of, being honest with yourself about if you'd be able to handle or diffuse a dangerous situation is one of the most important things you can do. Assaults, robberies, invasions and other situations are becoming more and more common, especially in today's emotionally charged environment. They also tend to happen without warning. Keep reading for three reasons why protecting yourself and your loved ones should be at the very top of your priority list.

1.) Because It's Your American Right

The Second Amendment states that Americans have the right to bear arms. While gun ownership is definitely a hot topic and a sometimes sensitive one, it's one you should strongly consider if you're truly serious about self-defense. As with all things, there's a right and a wrong way to go about it. Research and learning are two things you must focus on to ensure your own safety as well as the safety of others. Once you've gotten around to choosing and purchasing a gun, don't forget to invest a bit more into it. You'll want to buy a good quality storage safe along with the proper accessories for gun cleaning and carrying. If you're someone who likes personal touches or standing out, trying gun skins could be a great option to take your gun, scope or magazine from basic black to anything but. As far as self-defense goes, one of the best ways to learn how to use your gun is by actually using it. Signing up for a class can give you the experience you need to be comfortable with gun ownership and prepared for the worst case scenario.

2.) Because It Boosts Confidence

You know that amazing rush when you just know you've got something covered? Well, knowing that you're prepared to deal with the worst case scenario is no different. The first step in all of this is knowing that you are definitely capable of defending yourself, followed closely by an open mind. Wondering where to start? Martial arts is a very common outlet, with Krav Maga being one of the most popular class choices for people of all ages. Women particularly benefit from taking self-defense classes as well, finding themselves learning how things that might seem small — such as the way someone walks or holds their posture; can have a big impact on if an attacker decides to approach or not. What's great about classes is everyone can learn and become stronger, and there's no shortage of classes available.

3.) Because People Depend On You

Taking care of yourself as a whole is important. Making sure that those who depend on or look up to you notice that you're taking care of yourself is equally as important. Not only will you sleep better at night knowing your bases are covered; so will your spouse, your partner, or your children. Don't let it stop there, though. Make sure everyone is in on it and ready to learn. Encouraging self-defense by presenting it in a positive light is the key here. If you're a parent, chances are you have had some restless nights worrying that your school-aged child might be bullied or put into other compromising situations. Instead of worrying, be proactive and prepare your children so they have the tools to meet things head on. Make it a team effort and support each other.

While it does seem like every day there's something new waiting in the wings to be worried about, just remember that being prepared and confident will go a long way in protecting yourself and your family. When it comes to protection, there are so many ways to make sure you're covered. In addition to feeling safer and empowered, chances are your confidence will skyrocket and you'll feel on top of the world. How's that for incentive?
