If you're like me, then you take birthdays seriously. I don't necessarily want to go out and have the noisiest day, but I like to make things special.

Like everything dear to us, we always want to go all out where birthdays are concerned, especially when it comes to our friends and loved ones. It could be the birthday of your spouse, boyfriend, girlfriend, friend, kid, colleague, or classmate. But we know you also don’t want to do the everyday cake-and-drinks sort of thing. If you're tired of drab birthdays, I have compiled a list of how to spice things up. Pulling off the perfect surprise birthday party can be easy as 1,2,3...

Birthday wishes on a blog or ad space

We all know how annoying ads can get on the internet. But it’s definitely not annoying when the ad is a birthday wish to your loved one. Make sure it’s a news site or blog that he/she frequents every day. It might cost you but your heart will be warmed by the exciting thrill it will give that person when he/she stumbles upon a personalized wish while scrolling through their phone or computer.

Create a movie montage

It’s time to put your creativity and effort into something unforgettable. Get family and friends of the birthday boy or girl to send you a short ‘Happy Birthday’ clip. You could also throw in fun clips of good times the person has had. Then, use a video editing app to compile all these clips into one video and share on the birthday morning via email or instant messaging. A movie montage is personal and touching as one gets to see how so many people in their life love them.

Special delivery to their office

It’s great to spend your birthday at home or on an outing. However, some birthdays would fall on days one has to be in the office. When this happens, you can make the birthday person feel special by placing a special delivery to their place of work. There are so many fun gifts ranging from pizza delivery to cake, chocolate, or a fruit basket. Depending on the person, you could also go a step further to send balloons, flowers, and a card with a special note.

Put together a treasure hunt

Everyone loves the thrill that comes with seeking something that is rewarding. Both kids and adults will enjoy this activity. You get to plant clues that will take the birthday person from place to place for most of the day. This could very much play out as a wild goose chase that gets funnier by the minute. Each new clue should take them to different places such as a massage session, a barbecue grill, or even a cocktail bar. You could make the final clue lead to a surprise dinner with friends.

Hire an in-home personal chef

If you are looking to spoil the birthday person silly on their special day, a great way to do this is to treat them to the luxury of having a chef make their meal. This is a perfect treat for your spouse who would normally expect you to cook on that day as usual. Rather, you both could enjoy all morning in bed without lifting a finger as an in-home chef takes on the job of tantalizing your taste buds. You could also opt for the chef to handle a dinner instead as you and your partner are treated to lip-smacking gourmet dishes in an atmosphere of elegance and bliss.

Rent a limo

If you have the means to really go all out, then you should… Crazy Rich Asians style. You could rent a limo for the special day and cruise around town in it doing all the things you and the birthday person love. It could be as simple as getting ice cream or as exquisite as sipping wine over dinner. You could as well grab some pizza and drinks and drown it in the luxurious comfort of the limo.

Throw a themed party

A themed party is a good way to bring family and friends together with something they have in common. You should first be sure that the birthday person would want something as big as this before embarking on it. It takes a lot of planning and effort but it’s all worth it in the end. Get a party venue and choose a fun theme for the special day. It could be a decade-themed, movie-themed, or even a celebrity-themed shindig. Shop for great decor, get the music and food in place, send out invites to family and friends and you’re good to go.
