Five Ways to Keep Your Home Safe

By KevinPublished 7 years ago 3 min read

There are a lot of things to think about to protect your home. However, not protecting your home can lead to disasters, wasted money, and fatalities. It's worth it to do your homework. Here are some of the ways you can protect your home.

1. Fires

Not all fires can be avoided, but there are some things you can do to help prevent fires from happening. Be careful with electrical wiring. If anything is sparking, you need to have it fixed immediately. Clear excessive brush and weeds around the house. Trim tree branches away from the house. Remove diseased trees, because they can attract insects, and ultimately pose a fire threat. If you have a woodshop, or work with wood in your garage, frequently remove saw dust, because it is combustible.

2. Floods

You can't always avoid a flood either, but you can take steps to help protect your home. Many people never take the opportunity to look at maps to discover flood zones. You can look at a topographic map to discover where water would flow in the event that there was a flood. Keep a plan of what you need to do in the event you have a flood. You can keep sandbags on hand, make sure your sump pump is in good working order, and turn off the power to your home before there is flooding. Don't stand in water while turning it off.

3. Pests

Pests can get in your home in a number of ways. Their primary reason is to make your home theirs. Pests can introduce a host of germs and diseases. Some pests can be dangerous. It's important to protect your home from pests entering, because they can be difficult to get rid of. Caulk cracks you have in your kitchen and bathrooms. Make sure your garage door closes all the way. Close up any holes you have outside of your house. Don't leave food or crumbs out. Wipe everything down frequently. Reduce the clutter in your home where pests like to hide. If you already have pests, you will need to call pest control Twinsburg immediately.

4. Thieves

Thieves are a concern for your home too. You can help to protect your home from thieves in a variety of ways. You already know about trimming your trees, and other vegetation around your house. This will help to prevent thieves from trying to hide outside. Be sure to have adequate lighting outside, so that it makes it harder for thieves to break in. Installing cameras, and other smart technology can help you to keep an eye on your home while you are away. You can control lights within the home, and outside the home, which causes potential thieves to think you are home. This deters thieves from breaking into your home.

5. Child Hazards

All medicine and chemicals need to be kept away from children at all times. This can be hard to do, because kids climb, open things, and they get into things you wouldn't normally think about. For instance, you might keep hand sanitizer clipped on your purse or bag, and never think anything of it. The fruity and sweet smells of hand sanitizer is enticing to a toddler. They can get drunk on hand sanitizer, which doesn't sound major, but it can cause them to stop breathing. Everything you have that can be harmful needs to be kept in a place that can't be accessed.

Protecting your home doesn't have to be a full-time job. You just need to establish a system to keep everything safe. This type of system mostly involves keeping a well run, tidy home.
