Kitchen Mats – Let’s Get Comfortable in the Kitchen!

Kitchen Mats

By Kelvin BPublished 6 years ago 2 min read

Whether you work in a restaurant, a bar or a hotel, the commercial kitchen is often a bustling hub of activity. People are often moving about the space, from chefs preparing delicious meals to wait staff collecting or returning plates. As such, a number of hazards are present that could lead to serious injury or even death. The use of kitchen mats can help to prevent many serious accidents, as well as make the space more comfortable for those working in it.

But what sorts of mats are suitable for use in commercial kitchens? The answer to this question will generally depend on the establishment and environment, as there is more than one type of kitchen mat to choose from. In the list below, we have covered the main types that you will find in kitchens:

• Dry Area Anti Fatigue

Many who work in the hospitality industry spend all day on their feet, which can lead to sore feet, legs and lower back. This is particularly true of hard floors. Anti-fatigue mats are designed to provide cushioning underfoot, making it more comfortable for workers who are on their feet all day and lessening the strain on their bodies. Other benefits include increased productivity and prevention of joint stiffness.

• Wet Area Anti Fatigue

These kitchen mats offer the same benefits as dry area anti fatigue ones but are specifically designed for use in areas that are regularly exposed to wet conditions. Although kitchens are generally dry places, it is not uncommon for water and other liquids to be spilt. Bar areas are also known for being quite damp and sticky thanks to spilt drinks, so it makes sense to have mats that can withstand such conditions.

• Non-Slip

Ensuring that workers are comfortable is one thing but ensuring that they are protected against injuries sustained by slipping is equally (if not more) important. Slipping in spilled liquid can cause all sorts of injuries, from broken bones to severe cuts, but non-slip matting will ensure that there is a grip-able surface for workers to walk on. Many of these kitchen mats are designed to drain liquid off, removing it from the equation entirely.

• Cold Store

In larger commercial kitchens, it is not uncommon to find walk-in refrigerators and freezers. In fact, they are necessary for storing bulk amounts of food and beverages that are used to feed the hundreds of patrons that pass through each day. As moisture is prevalent in such environments, ensuring that you have the proper kitchen mats is a must. These are designed for exposure to cold or freezing conditions.

• Grease Proof

Let’s face it – there is a lot of grease in the kitchen, and it has a tendency to spray everywhere (particularly when you’re rushing to get meals out on time). The sticky residue can create a real slipping hazard and, as these liquids tend to be thicker than others (like water), run off can be a real problem. Fortunately, there are mats that have been specifically designed for use in greasy environments.

If you’re in the market for kitchen mats, we hope that the information provided above has enabled you to choose the right ones for your needs. It is important to keep in mind that different areas of the space may require different kinds of matting, so ensure that you have chosen accordingly. It may seem like a hassle but, at the end of the day, sacrificing on the safety of your workers and even the general public is simply not worth it.
