Unique Shelter Options During A Disaster

By M.L. LewisPublished 2 years ago 3 min read

Shelter is one of the most important aspects of your survival. It is part of the “3 Rule”, meaning you can’t survive more than three days without it. A shelter is a place that gives you protection from bad weather, danger, or something else that is harmful. It can be any architectural structure like a house, or a natural formation like a cave. Every year fifteen million homes are destroyed by disaster, costing people 3.3 million dollars. Here are a few places that can provide you shelter in case of a doomsday scenario.

Movie Theaters

Seen as a cornerstone of entertainment for many, this place can also be your saving grace in a disaster. There is plenty of food and drinks at the snack bar. The thick walls mean this type of structure is soundproof, and sturdy enough to survive extreme elements. This, combined with the few entrances and exits, makes it the perfect stronghold against attacking forces. If you are lucky enough to have electricity still, then you can keep yourself amused by watching DVDs on the big screens. Some employees have figured out how to connect game consoles to it.

The Library

Many people might not consider this as a good place to bug out too because of the large windows, but it is definitely on my top five list of places to go. Libraries are strongly built structures because they are designed to withstand large groups and heavy equipment. They are located in the hearts of cities and communities, meaning rescue will be close by. Freshen up on your survival skills with their wide variety of books. Many provide drinks and snacks to visitors, which will be helpful in the short term. Banks

Another strong structure you can survive in could be your local bank. Though you might be lacking in food choices, some provide drinks to waiting customers. When it comes to security, this place is top-notch. To protect its customers, they have very few windows for people to spy on your group. Emergency generators are a requirement in order to keep functioning during an extended blackout. The vault can double as a Faraday Cage and a bomb shelter in an emergency. Inside the vault is a panic button that will alert authorities to your whereabouts in case there is a rescue mission going on in your area.

A Restaurant

According to the Natural Restaurant Association, there are estimated to be around one million restaurants currently in operation in the US as of 2023. A restaurant is any business that prepares and serves food and beverages. Most of them keep three days’ worth of product on hand, so you’ll likely never go hungry here. For sanitation reasons, there has to be a bathroom and cleaning products available to keep things hygienic. The refrigeration unit (NOT THE FREEZER!) can double as a bomb shelter, much like the vault at the bank can do.

Entertainment Centers

In the US it is estimated there are currently 6,953 Entertainment Centers, like Dave and Busters, in operation. Most often they will be closed during a blackout, but that doesn’t mean this isn’t a good place to seek shelter in. They often have a small restaurant in them that provides similar perks to a large-scale one. They are sturdy and soundproof, like a movie theater. There are no windows as they want people to lose track of time while inside, which helps you defend it better. The prize counter has toys to entertain you and clothing to wear if yours becomes damaged or wet.

The emphasis on shelter as a crucial element for survival underscores its significance in ensuring safety and protection. The statistics on homes destroyed by disasters serve as a stark reminder of the importance of preparedness. Exploring various options for shelter in challenging scenarios becomes not just a practical consideration but an essential aspect of resilience.

I would choose the library. It would keep me entertained, and I could burn the crappy ones like Harry Potter to keep warm. And there would be plenty of TP. No food, of course, but it could be my home base at least.
