How To Make Money With Your Knitting!
Tips on how to make money with your knitting.

If you are here then you are probably wondering if you can make money with your knitting and if so how to.
Yes it is possible and you can actually make quite a living off it, if you know how to.
It is actually how I make most of my living.
You see I cannot work outside of my home, I suffer from anxiety, depression and autism, plus a few others.
It makes it hard, I cannot leave the house unless I have someone I know and trust with me and even then it is still hard.
So obviously no one wants to hire someone who needs a person with them at all time.
That makes life very difficult so I set out on ways to make a living from home.
At the time all this was happening I was knitting, knitting helps calm me down when my anxiety spikes up, helps me on the days when things are tough.
So one day I wrote out a list of all the things I am good at, all my skills, knitting was one of the ones at the very top of this list, that was when I decided to see if I could make a living off of my skill, my passion and my talent.
Now I am making good money off my knitting, and even working on making more, knitting has helped make my life easier with my mental health, has made it more possible for my to actually have a life, it has helped me in so many ways.
And what's better is that you can do it too.
How you ask? Well here is a detailed list on all the ways I make money with my knitting.
I will list then top to bottom, the ways that make me the most money at the top.
1- Sell Your Knitting Pattern Designs.
This is what brings me in the most of my income.
I design my own knitting patterns (obviously it is illegal to sell others work) and I publish my patterns on a couple of online sites.
Such as LoveCrafts, Ravelry and even my own Etsy Store which is named after me Nicola Rattley.
I mainly focus on designing toys, as you could see in the photo on the top of this post, all those toys I created, and since then I have created many more.
With more patterns the more money I make, but if you want to make money off of selling your own knitting patterns you need to get serious about it.
If you want to make any serious money off of your knitting you need to see it not just as a hobby but as a business.
You always need to be designing new patterns, and publishing them as often as you can.
The more patterns you offer the more choices you're customers will have and the more likely they are to purchase your patterns and keep coming back for more.
However selling patterns does not always bring you a steady income, some months of sales will be better than others, some months you might sell 20 patterns, some you might only sell 2, that is why it is good to have a backup income as well.
2- Sell Knitted Items.
This one takes a lot of work, and a big customer base, but there is multiple ways that you can do it.
Now I knit my own toys but if you don't design your own patterns I know some designers that let you knit their patterns and sell the items but you must ask permission first.
Some may want you to give them a little bit of the profits, others may just want recognition that it was their pattern, you just need to find the designers willing to allow you to do so.
But once you have your patterns this is where the long hours come into it.
You will need at least a few of the same items, I recommend at least 3 of the same, but I also suggest making the same item in different colours, that way if someone likes it but has a certain colour they prefer they might have that option.
And you will need many different items to offer.
It takes quite a while to knit up the items to sell though.
Now you might be wondering where exactly you can sell these knitted items too, here is a list of where I sell my knitted items at.
1- Monthly Markets.
Local monthly markets in big cities are a great place to sell your knitted items, of course you can sell in smaller towns but don't expect to sell all your items, the bigger the place the more you will sell, that is why I recommend big cities.
Now you also will not be able to go every month, you can't knit the stock you need in that small amount of time, not unless you give up eating, sleeping, everything but knit, knit, knit.
I suggest going once every 6 months, that gives you plenty of time to knit enough stock to take.
But obviously this won't give you a steady income, it'll give you a boost income every 6 months but it'll be less frequent, though it will give you quite a bit of money every 6 months if you manage to sell at big markets.
2- Etsy Store.
Etsy is a great place for crafters to sell their items, even us knitters.
You just need to know how to market on there, and you always need to be adding new items.
Otherwise your store will fade into the background and be lost in the massive amount of people trying to sell on there.
But there is a easy way to keep that from happening when selling knitting items.
For example all you need to do is at least add a new item every few days, the more the better.
And a way to do this is to knit the same item in different colours and offer each one as a new listing.
However for each listing Etsy takes a small fee so you will need to have a small budget plan to make sure you can afford all the items you are offering and the postage costs.
3- A Facebook Store.
This is a way that you can have an online store and not have to pay out any fees unless you want too.
And you can list as many items as you want.
The only downfall to this is it is a lot harder to get your store out there and noticed, especially in the fact that you will have to market your store much more to get it found.
4- Ebay.
This is a great place to sell items of any kind, you can add tags that help your items to be found which is also a big help, and they don't take a fee until after you have sold your item.
Unless you have a huge amount of items posted up, there is a limited you can have but it's quite a bit
So there you have it, a list of places you can sell your knitted items.
3- Start A Blog.
That's right, you can easily make money with your blog if you know how.
This is my very own knitting blog and it is a great way to earn money.
You can advertise your knitted items on here, you can offer special deals to your knitting patterns, plus more.
One way I make money from my blog is I advertise my knitting patterns on here, and also offer inspiration, tips and ideas, plus helpful posts like this one.
And once your blog is up and running you can even consider Adsense.
Adsense is a site that puts ads on your blog, and for each click on that ad you can get a commision, this is one of the way many bloggers make extra money.
So even starting a knitting blog can help you make extra income.
4- Youtube.
Yep that's right I have my own knitting youtube channel.
I advertise my knitting patterns on there, I offer lessons to people on how to knit certain stitches, plus much more.
It is a great way to advertise and get your knitting and your personality out there.
Thousands of people watch youtube vidoes everyday and there are a lot of knitters out there who love to watch knitting videos, who want to see the knitting fanbase grow and get more popular.
Youtube is a great way for that to happen.
Also once you're youtube channel hits a high amount of views and subscribers you can also offer Adsense on there and make money from each ad that gets watched.
5- Knitting Books.
I have published many knitting patterns over the years and I decided that I would start publishing my own knitting pattern books, and offer it for a smaller amount then what it would cost to buy all the patterns single.
There are many sites where you can publish your ebook or even paperbacks and it doesn't cost you anything, just a little bit of your earnings.
Cute and Cuddly Knitting Pattern Book.

This is the first knitting pattern book I ever designed and published.
I offer it on my Etsy store, as an ebook, the site it is published through, Amazon.com is where you can buy both the ebook as well as the paperback.
Offering this deal helps you make a chunk of money and get a bit more of a name for you as a designer so it's a really good way to get your knitting patterns out there.
So there you have it, a list of the way that I make a steady income from my knitting.
Now you don't have to do all of these things, but you will have to commit to them if you want to make serious money from your knitting.
Once you want to make serious money it is no longer a hobby, it is a business and needs to be treated like one as well, you need to have the mind of a business owner and the marketing skills.
Also you will need to look into your tax laws in your country to find out the legalisties of it also, it will vary from state to state, country to country.
But there is ways to make serious money from your knitting and by now you should have an idea on how you can achieve that.
I hope this post has helped you in more than one way and now that you will take your passion for knitting and let it help you make your life easier as it has mine.
Enjoy a knitful day and please don't forget to like or comment on my post and feel free to check out my other blog posts, you may also find other helpfuls tips on my other posts as well.
