How to Grow Grapes in India - Step-by-Step Guidelines

Wine grapes and dessert grapes are not difficult to grow in the home garden because they thrive well in wide areas. Grapes are divided into two categories: European grapes and American grapes. European grapes are less hardy, and they can survive without damage where winter temperatures drop to 10°F (-12°C). On the other hand, American grapes are most hardy; you can grow them in regions where winter temperatures fall to 0°F (-18°C). European grapes are favourable for a long and warm growing season–at least 170 frost-free days.

Choosing Grapes to Plant

• Plant 1-year-old plants that are certified disease-free and not virus-infected. A one-year-old plant should be approximately 14 inches tall.
• Hybrid and American varieties can be grown from cuttings on their own roots.
• You should graft the European grapes into phylloxera-resistant rootstocks. (Phylloxera is a sap-sucking pest related to aphids feeding on the roots and leaves of grapevines.)

Best Climate and Site for Growing Grapes

• Grapes are hardy in Zones 4 to 10 and you should choose the area where the grapes grow well.
• American grapes are hardy in zones 4 through 7; They are not hardy in areas where winter temperatures drop below -10 degrees. Farmers grow them best with at least 165 to 180 frost-free days.
• European vinifera grapes grow best in dry climates. They are hardy in zones 7 - 10. Farmers grow them best with 170 or more frost-free days each year.
• French-American hybrids are widely adaptable.
• Muscadine grapes grow in zones 7 through 9. They can withstand humidity and high heat and are mostly disease resistant.
• Plant all grapes in the complete sun with good ventilation.
• Grapes thrive well in light, loamy soil rich in organic matter. However, you can grow the grapes well in rocky, flat or clay soils. Grapes that grow in light soil that usually mature early and have higher sugar levels.
• Choose a deep planting site of soil (9 - 12 inches or more)with good drainage.
• You can grow the grapes best in slightly acid to neutral soil with a pH of 5.5 - 5.7. The soil quality can affect the flavour and sugar content of the grapes.
• Avoid planting in low places where cold air can settle.
• Do not plant near wild vines that may harbour the disease.

Soil Preparation

Soil is tilled, and you should prepare the pits at appropriate spacing as grapevines are basically planted in pits. The depth of pits ranges from 60 to 90 cm. Pit Spacing depends on the type of training system and variety. Before planting, you should prepare the pit and keep them open for 30 days.
