Have you ever wondered why fish smell so strong? All creatures that live in saltwater have cells made up of amino acids, and when they die, certain enzymes attack these cells.
The tissues of the fish decompose very quickly and trimethylamine is released, the compound that gives that specific smell. The fresher the fish, the less it smells, so never buy a fish that smells strong.
The smell of fish can stubbornly permeate every corner of the house for days on end, but there are solutions to ventilate and get rid of it much faster.
First of all, the most important thing is to open the windows wide when cooking the fish, so that the smell does not seep into all the fabrics. When frying fish, use the hood and open the window. You will notice a big difference after you finish cooking.
Prepare some goodies that cover the smell of fish. One of the simplest methods is to make coffee because it has a very strong aroma. Add cinnamon, nutmeg, and other spices to it, for a very pleasant and intense smell. Sweets also cover unpleasant odors, especially those containing vanilla.
You don't have to cook anything to cover up the smell of fish, but you can simply boil some ingredients that will remove it quickly. Put a saucepan of water on medium heat, bring to a boil, then add orange peel, cinnamon sticks, nutmeg, or cloves. Let the water simmer with these ingredients for an hour and add more water as needed.
Vinegar is a precious ingredient when we want to get rid of unpleasant odors in the house. When cooking fish in the oven, simply place a bowl of vinegar next to it and leave it for a few hours after you have finished cooking, to absorb the unpleasant odors. You can add citrus fruits to the vinegar for a refreshing effect.
Another ingenious solution is to use scented candles, which replace unpleasant odors with enticing ones. You can find such candles in many stores, at low prices, and they are very useful every time you fry or prepare dishes that leave an unpleasant smell in the kitchen.
Apples prove to be very useful when you want to get rid of the smell of fried fish. Before putting the fish in the pan, heat a few slices of apple in it. They will reduce the odor removed by the fish and will not spoil its taste.
To get rid of the smell of fish impregnated in pots and plastic containers, cut a few potatoes in half, sprinkle sea salt over them, and put them in the container (with lid) for at least 2 hours;
