How to Design a Home: 6 Tips to Remember

Home decoration tricks

You finally get to design your new home but you don't know where to start? Or you've decided to revamp your existing home and make it exquisite? Here's what you have to have in mind:

1. Choose the colors carefully

Nothing will personalize your home more than a fresh coat of paint. It's very important to do it before you start moving the furniture and the boxes in. And if you're revamping the existing home, this should be the first thing to take care of.

There are so many colors and hues to choose from, so the first step should be to decide what vibe you want your home (and each room individually) to exude. The inspiring and stimulating effect will be best achieved if you opt for yellows, reds, and browns. On the other hand, if you're aiming at creating a calming environment, then pick blues, greens or grays, namely, the cooler colors. Gray may be the most universal color there is - it's elegant, timeless and it goes great with other colors.

Last tip: you should definitely try out testers on various wall angles. Let it stay for a week to make sure that's the hue you wanted and that you can commit to it.

2. Prioritize your purchases

When moving into a new home, you can expect big expenses because you will have to buy new furniture. It's one reason more not to rush the process and to think carefully about every purchase, as well as to prioritize which items you definitely need in the first few months.

In other words, the safest bet is to buy one piece of furniture at a time, to makes sure it completely fits the style and that it's of good quality, too.

You will probably want to buy several basic items first, such as a sofa, bed, a dresser, and a dining table. The rest of it can wait.

The important thing is to stick with your list of priorities so that you don't get carried away with a cute piece of furniture that doesn't have anything in common with the rest of the pieces.

3. Envision the entire home

Filling your new home with items and furniture without a clear idea on what you're trying to achieve is a big mistake that would be difficult to correct.

You need to have a complete vision of your home before you buy a single thing. The safest way would be to check new home designs that are both modern and beautiful. By seeing the complete look, you will identify your favorites more easily. A complete home design will help you tackle each room like it's a part of the bigger project. It would be a great mistake to design one room at a time without thinking about how it would connect to others or picking items for a room without knowing your goal.

4. Invest in a quality sofa

The sofa is the anchor of the living room, so you need to be prepared to invest in it. After all, it's the item where you take a nap, watch TV, or sit when you're having a chat with a guest or a family member.

Pick a sofa that's perfect in size, color, and style with the rest of the room, and make sure it's also functional and of high quality. The price may shock you, but it's a smart investment if all your requirements are checked. Don't settle for anything less because this piece of furniture is there to last.

5. Don't go for the boring arrangement

It would be a big mistake to simply place all of your furniture against the wall. It's not interesting nor modern. Instead, play with the layout - maybe you could place a desk outward from the wall or two sofas next to each other. Browse different furniture arrangements online to get some ideas that will make you think outside the box.

6. Lay the right rugs

Rugs come in wonderful versatility and they provide warmth, texture, and personality to every room. Therefore, they are a very important piece inside your home.

If you want an affordable rug, then choose a large rug made of natural fibers, such as sisal or seagrass. It's a great solution for hard flooring. You can also decorate that existing rug with an additional layer - a patterned rug in vibrant colors. A good option would also be to get a customized rug that will fit perfectly into the room in terms of size and color.

All in all

Designing a home is a process that can take up to even a year, which is perfectly ok. It's the best way to ensure you'll be happy with the outcome and not to regret any decision. Take things slow and be sure to check all of your options before you commit to any item.
