How Often Should You Vacuum Your Floors?
Experts weigh in on how often we should be vacuuming our floors...and we may be a bit behind.
We don't have to hide the fact that doing household chores isn't our favorite activity. Between work, cooking, trying to have a social life, and trying to find some down time, sometimes cleaning can go on the back burner for a bit!
As I'm sure you agree, usually the more visible the mess, the quicker it will get cleaned. So usually we are pretty good on dishes and try to keep things tidy, but sometimes those "hidden" less obvious messes and dirt can go ignored for weeks.
One of the cleaning tasks that we find ourselves ignoring the most is vacuuming. I mean, as long as the floor doesn't look dirty, it's fine right? Well, according to the experts, this is WRONG. And in the spirit of starting a new year with new & good habits, we decided to research a bit and see just how often the experts say we should vacuum our floors.
No matter what floors you have in your house, they collect dust, dirt, and grime that you don't want hanging around your home. Especially if you have pets or kids that spend a lot of time on the floor, cleaning & vacuuming your floors on a regular basis is an important step to protecting the health of your family!
Of course, the frequency on which you vacuum the floors in your home depends on multiple factors! The type of floor you have dictates the general frequency that you should vacuum, and of course if you have some furry friends that love to shed you'll want to clean more often! But, for general guidelines, the experts say:
- Carpets & Rugs: Should be vacuumed at least twice a week
- Hardwood, Tile, Vinyl: Should be vacuumed at least once a week
If you do have some cute four-legged friends living in your home, you should consider trying to vacuum daily, as this gives you the best chance to pick up as much dander, hair, and dirt. Hard surface floors give you a little bit of wiggle room, but carpet is notorious for catching a lot of that dirt & dust that you DON'T want in your house, and the longer these particles sit on the carpet, the deeper they sink down and the harder they are to get out.
Our Favorite Vacuuming Tips
- Give High Traffic Areas a Little More TLC: The more people and pets who walk through a certain room or area of your house, the more dust and dirt that will collect on the flooring. So make sure that when you are vacuuming, give these high traffic areas a little extra love and run the vacuum over these spots a couple of extra times!
- Make Sure to Clean Your Vacuum Cleaner!: This may sound a little silly at first, but it's important to make sure the internal parts of your vacuum cleaner are in tip-top shape and clean themselves before you start vacuuming! Your cleaner most likely has a few different filters and a couple chambers. To make sure that your vacuum cleaner is running as effectively as possible, you'll want to make sure that all the filters are clean and dry before you start your cleaning session and that the dirt chamber is empty!
- Keep a Vacuum Cleaner on Each Floor of Your Home: One of the more annoying parts of vacuuming your home if you have multiple levels is dragging that heavy vacuum cleaner up and down your stairs! We know from personal experience that this can often cause you to not clean your whole home as often. If you are able to, keeping a vacuum cleaner on each level of your house can help motivate you to clean more often!
