Fragrance Shopping Made Easier: A Simple Guide

Do you know the most common mistake you make while choosing a fragrance?

By Rohan JadhavPublished 5 years ago 3 min read

You clamor to the perfume section of the store, pop off the cap of the tester bottle that you find visually attractive, and then directly sniff the atomizer. This is considered to be a mistake because all you smell is the top note without the heart and the base note. And more importantly, you are not checking whether the fragrance suits your body odor.

Choosing a fragrance that fits your image can be a hustle but believe me when I say you do not want to rush the process. Take your time to choose your signature fragrance and purchase from Perfume Center at a sale price. Buy a scent that you feel suits your personality, it is important to go through a proper process and make an informed decision.

Fragrance Test

The most important rule of fragrance testing is to not test more than 4 fragrances. Make sure to give your nose a break. You may have a variety of fragrances in front of you but your nose has a limit so do not let it be overwhelmed with nasal fatigue. If you do get nasal fatigue, your nose won’t be able to differentiate various smells as it becomes less sensitive to certain smells.

We all have experienced different perfumes smelling the same. It is generally not the perfume’s fault but your own. So remember not to overwork your nose. Test out a maximum of 4 fragrances in a go.

Trust your nose! Something that smells wonderful to your friend may not smell appealing to you so always follow your nose. After all, smelling good is not always about appeasing others. It is also about you, as the fragrance you find appealing will help boost your confidence as well as make you feel comfortable.

DO NOT touch the fragrance! When you touch or spray the fragrance on yourself whether directly on your skin or your clothes, it will affect when gauging the smell of the next fragrance you try. Often you feel like the fragrance you bought smells different when you try it at home than the one you tried from the tester bottle. So make sure to not mix the fragrances while testing.

Blotter Test

Blotter test more commonly known as the Paper test should always be your first step when trying out different fragrances. They are simple to use and more effective in helping you narrow down the list of choices in front of you.

• Hold the paper strip from one end and spray the fragrance downwards on the opposite end of the strip once or twice.

• Wave the paper strip a couple of times below your nose. Make sure the strip does not touch your nose.

• Gently sniff it.

Do not test more than 4 fragrances. Remember to let your nose rest.

Skin Test

Once you have narrowed down the fragrances you liked after the Blotter test, it is time for you to try them on your skin. The reason being, fragrances react differently to body warmth and your body odour. Reserve this step for a very small number of fragrances that appealed to you. Follow the steps below and purchase from the Perfume center at sale price.

• Spritz twice on your wrist or the back of your hand.

• Let it dry naturally. Do not rub the freshly scented area.

• Once your skin is dry, bring the scented area closer to your nose and take a sniff. Do not touch your nose.

Trying out fragrance on your skin is unfortunately limited to two times – once on each hand. Avoid testing fragrance on other body parts as they will just end up mixing with other fragrances and your nose will just get confused.
