Efficient Prevention of Drain Clogging

Efficient Prevention of Drain Clogging

By Gerge BensPublished 5 years ago 3 min read

You always face a dilemma while dealing with your drains. What is better - to prevent the problem of their clogging or solve it when it has already happened? The choice is obvious - prevention is always easier and less costly than cure. However, you may not always think about the possible outcomes while washing your hair in the bathtub or shower. If you notice that it sheds badly, try to think about using a certain guard over the pipe to catch it. This is a strong recommendation from Tornado Plumbing & Drains and the next one is connected with washing dishes. Even if you do it in a dishwasher or use your hands, scrape all the plates and pans carefully over the trash bin to take away all the remnants of food and grease.

Bathroom

The drain stoppers in the sink or tub should be cleaned regularly. All the particles, hair or soap scum, other types of waste, and leftovers usually stick on the stoppers. You receive the slowed-down or fully clogged drain pipes then. If your habit is to flush all the paper items down the toilet, the situation can become hazardous as well. Such paper can stick in the drain pipe and cause the backup. Even the entire sewer system can be blocked in this way.

Kitchen

Use the garbage disposal for all the food residues and never let them down the pipes. Your kitchen sink should be equipped with a drain strainer for catching all the food that may be thrown into it. Don’t think that some liquids like oil or melted grease will not harm the drains if poured into them. They tend to harden inside and build up clogs. There should be a special container with a lid for such liquids that can be thrown in the bin after you have poured the excess grease into it. Or you are sure to receive a badly clogged kitchen pipe and sink backup as a result.

The effective prevention also includes pouring boiling water into the sink drain just once per week. The hot water can melt all the fats that may have collected within the pipe. Be attentive and careful about pouring hot water. Do it very slowly to prevent its splashing and burning you.

All the grease from cooking should be kept in some old can or container to throw it away when it hardens.

Never throw the used coffee grounds in the sink. You can use them for your mulch pile or put them into the garbage.

Your fixture, either in the kitchen or bathroom, may need some special choice of drain-graters or screens. So, look for them in your nearest hardware or household store. They can reduce the problem of different scums and residues quite effectively. You can even take a photo of your plumbing system, kitchen sink, or bathtub to explain the matter of the choice to the shop consultants. You are sure to find a proper screen or filter there.

Do not forget to maintain your drain cleanness by pouring hot water into it weekly or just using some vinegar for a better effect. When you pour the vinegar, let it remain in the pipe just for half an hour before flushing it with hot water. Another useful tip is about making sure that the pipes are free from clogs or leaks. Ask some experts to check your plumbing system and you will feel confident that no emergency can happen. Emergencies are always costly and stressful. So, you need to avoid them as effectively as you can.
