Boba is a very popular drink, and luckily very easy to make!
Boba was originated in Taiwan, and is commonly a sweet drink with small dark balls or “pearls”
It can come in various different varieties though, and the different flavors are endless.
Although this recipe does not have the traditional dark brown color, you will still have a wide variety of flavors you can have. In fact, you can even use water!
This recipe also uses Agar Agar Powder, making it a great option for people with food restrictions like High Histamine Response or Allergies*.
Keep in mind that it is really important to use the exact amount of the powder. Too little makes it fall apart, and too much makes it too thick.
Now, lets make some Boba!
*This varies from person to person.
1 serving:
Ingredients:
3/4 of a cup of liquid (Water for plain pearls and fruit juice for flavor)
2 milliliters or 2 grams of Agar Agar Powder
1 cup of vegetable or olive oil (This is to make the shape of the pearls, not to be eaten)
2 grams of honey (Optional)
Tools:
A small sauce pan
Tall cup
Instructions:
Part one:
1. Pour oil into a thin, tall cup (Use a clear cup to see how the pearls are formed)
2. Put oil cup in freezer
Part two:
1. Place liquid of your choice, honey (If using) and Agar Powder in small sauce pan.
2. Stir the mix quickly for more pop-able pearls.
3. Place the temp on stovetop on high for 5 minutes (More or less depending on your stovetop)
4. After five minutes, lower stovetop temp to low for 10 minutes.
Part three:
1. Take out the cup of oil you put in the freezer earlier, and place on counter.
2. Take your dropper and suck up the mix of Agar Powder and liquid.
3. Pour the drops of the mix into cold oil. Keep repeating until you finished your Agar Powder and liquid mix. (Make sure to drop the mix into tiny bubbles and not big ones)
4. Put cup of mix drops and oil into refrigerator (Not freezer this time) for 20 minutes
5. Take out cup of mix and oil out of the fridge. Look closely, and “Voilá!” You should have tiny pearls.
6. Rinse off oil.
7. Serve with honey, sugar, or other toppings. You can also put the pearls into drinks.
Tips:
2 grams of Agar Powder may seem like way too little, but it is the perfect amount. It expands in the water!
The pearls in the picture above are clear because I used water instead of juice. If you do this, pour some honey or other sweetener on them if serving raw.
If you think the mix is not boiled yet, keep on medium fire for a bit longer.
This is a recipe that may be tricky to master. Don’t stress if it doesn’t come out right! The pearls may also blend into each other, so keep them small.
Boba Fun Facts:
Boba has been around since the 80’s!
Boba pearls are made with tapioca. Thats from cassava root!
Boba is slang for a unexpected word in Taiwan…
