Biggest Renewable Energy Companies in the World
Renewable Developers

The renewable energy industry is growing at a rapid pace. There are now more than 1,000 companies worldwide that produce solar, wind and other forms of renewable energy. These companies operate in four major sectors: utility-scale power plants; wind farms; solar photovoltaic projects; and small-scale distributed generation systems like rooftop solar panels or electric vehicle charging stations. Some renewable developers provide these services directly to the public while others sell them through service providers like partners or portfolio managers who manage portfolios of customers' needs through different types of projects such as large utility-scale power plants or small home installations all across the country.
DONG Energy
- Dong Energy is the largest renewable energy company in the world.
- Dong Energy is also one of the largest offshore wind developers in the world, with an installed capacity of over 10 gigawatts (GW).
- Dong Energy is also one of Europe's biggest offshore wind power producers, with over 4 GW installed capacity across its portfolio.
Dong Energy has been involved with some revolutionary projects: it was behind Denmark's first commercial offshore wind farm; its turbines were used for the construction of what would become Europe's largest offshore wind farm on Dogger Bank (offshore North Sea), and it developed both Nord Stream 2 and 3 pipelines under Russian waters—the latter being named by Forbes magazine as "the most expensive project ever undertaken by Russia."
NextEra Energy
NextEra Energy is the largest renewable energy company in the U.S., with a portfolio of over 1,800 facilities that generate more than 7.5 million megawatt hours annually. The company's headquarters are located in Juno Beach, Florida and its CEO is James L. Robo.
NextEra Energy employs over 11,000 people across its end markets: wind power generation; solar photovoltaic (PV) systems; distributed energy resources (DER); customer engagement and support services; transmission systems integration & construction (TSIC), as well as other adjacent areas like customer service centres or project management offices
Iberdrola S.A.
Iberdrola S.A. is a Spanish multinational electric utility company based in Bilbao, Basque Country. It generates and distributes electricity for about 20 million customers in Spain and energy clients in other European countries such as France, Italy and Portugal. The company also owns several renewable energy companies that generate electricity from hydroelectric facilities or wind farms across the globe (e.g., Energon Wind Farms Ltd., Hidroeléctrica del Marañón).
Iberdrola is not only one of the largest renewable energy companies in the world but also one of its largest listed companies by market capitalization ($2 trillion).
Enel Green Power
Enel Green Power is a renewable energy company. It was formed in 2010 and is based in Italy, with operations worldwide. Enel Green Power has over 30,000 MW of renewable energy capacity across its power stations around the world. The company also operates on a global scale with offices in 14 countries including Italy, Ireland, Germany and Mexico.
Avangrid
Avangrid is a US-based utility company that operates in the United States and Canada. It's also a subsidiary of Iberdrola, which provides electricity to more than seven million customers across Europe and Latin America.
Avangrid was formed in 2012 as part of a merger between Florida Power & Light Company (FPL) and North Carolina Electric Membership Corporation (NEC). Since then, Avangrid has grown into one of the largest publicly traded utilities in North America. As such, it's headquartered in Portland, Maine—home to some pretty amazing renewable energy companies like HydroMiner!
American Electric Power Co.
American Electric Power Co., Inc. is the largest utility in the United States and operates in 11 states. The company's primary business is electricity generation and transmission, but it also provides natural gas distribution services to about 1 million customers across its service area.
The AEP has a large wind farm with more than 1,000 turbines that produces enough electricity to power more than 600,000 homes each year (as of 2016). It also owns one of America's largest solar farms at Big Sandy near Crockett Lake in West Virginia.
EDP - Energias de Portugal, S.A.
EDP is a Portuguese multinational electric utility company headquartered in Lisbon, Portugal. It is the largest electricity producer in Portugal and one of the largest in Europe. EDP has over 30 million customers in Europe, with operations covering 12 countries: Portugal (including Madeira), Spain and France. The company also owns interests in other businesses such as renewable energy generation (via Sonae Sierra), telecommunications infrastructure operators Oi SA/Telemar Norte Leste S/A (a joint venture with America Movil) and an oil refinery near Porto Alegre Brazil.
Vattenfall AB
Vattenfall AB is a Swedish utility company that was founded in 1990. The company has about 30,000 employees and operates in Sweden, Germany, the Netherlands and the UK.
Vattenfall is one of the largest renewable energy companies in Europe with more than 1 GW of installed capacity. It also has a significant stake in wind farms around the world (Germany especially) which produce around 2% of its overall electricity supply from renewable sources at present time - this would increase to about 10% by 2020 according to their projections!
The company generated revenues of SEK86 billion ($9 billion) last year alone so it's not surprising that you'll find them among these top five biggest renewable energy providers worldwide today:
Berkshire Hathaway Energy
Berkshire Hathaway Energy is an American public utility holding company based in Omaha, Nebraska. It is the primary subsidiary of Warren Buffett's Berkshire Hathaway Inc., which also owns and operates electricity generation facilities throughout the United States and abroad.
The company was formed in 1999 when Buffett acquired a controlling stake in San Diego Gas & Electric (SDG&E), which had been spun off from Southern California Edison (SCE). He later merged SDG&E with Utah Power & Light (UP&L) and Sierra Pacific Power to form NV Energy, one of several utilities owned by Berkshire Hathaway at that time. In 2000, he purchased ConEdison Utilities; ConEdison became part of NV Energy until 2006 when it was renamed HPS Group as part of an effort to better align its name with its parent company's other businesses including trucking services like LPG Express International Inc. In 2007 HPS Group merged with SoCalGas Holdings Company LLC (SoCalGas); both companies continue operations today under the same name: "HPS".
Xcel Energy Inc.
Xcel Energy is a regulated electric and natural gas utility. The company serves 2.1 million electric customers and 1.1 million natural gas customers in eight states across the Midwest and Western United States.
It was founded in 1883 as Colorado Power & Light Company, which eventually became Xcel Energy's predecessor company before merging with Public Service Company of Colorado (PSCo) on October 28th 2012 to form PSCo-Xcel Energy Ecosystems Incorporated (PSCo-XE).
Conclusion
We hope this has helped give you a better understanding of the world of renewable energy development. As we mentioned earlier, there are many different types of companies that make up the sector, so it can be difficult to find out which one is best suited for your needs. But as we've seen with some examples above, each type has its strengths and unique style of operating; although they all share one thing in common—they're all committed to protecting our planet for future generations!
