Subtle: Meet Liam the Liar, the Mean Girls, and Gossiping Gail and Learn How to Deal With Them.
"People don't leave their jobs, they leave the people they work with," a friend once remarked. The dynamics of personality play a significant part in job happiness. Find a way to manage the Liam the Liars, Mean Girls, and Gossiping Gails in your life by balancing your mind, body, and soul. You will be familiar with all of the contributors to this piece, without whom it would not have been feasible. No matter what company you work for, the same actors are always present. Let's get to know a few of the players. Liam the Liar It might take some time before you find Liam the Liar, depending on how strong he is.
He is able to stare you in the eye with a sincerity that does not trigger red flags even as the lies flow from his mouth. Liam informed his aide Tammy that he had just left a meeting where he asked his supervisor if Tammy could work flexible hours. It is only when you start connecting the dots and the proof enters your consciousness that you can see Liam's true hues. He claimed his supervisor had rejected him. He didn't even bring it up for debate after I just left the same conference. As soon as you have an intuition that something isn't right, the proof starts to mount in your favor.
When Liam truly believes his own lies and is unable to distinguish between truth and fantasy, he is most dangerous. No matter what strategy you use, a deceiver will use lies to get out of any predicament. As long as they maintain their dominance, they don't care who they bring down in the process. It's crucial to call Liam the Liar out on his lies as soon as you catch him telling one in order to prevent getting sucked into his web of deception. There are times when a group intervention with a mediator is necessary to question him about his actions. He might still think he's correct, but he'll have to admit that some of you are playing him.
Although we all know Liam is dishonest, we rarely confront him about it, which is how he succeeds. The Mean Girls is a plus. The workplace bullies are typically female 99.9% of the time, which doesn't say much for the sisters. Even though they act maliciously on their own, they are unstoppable in groups. You can sometimes split and win. When I shared an idea with one workplace Meanie, she immediately said it was a great plan. Her fellow Meanies reacted as if I had just said, "Tomorrow I'd like to use your children as sacrificial lambs and burn them at the stake." when I presented it in a meeting. She remained silent, the absence of I thought Belinda's idea wasn't too awful after she spoke with me about it. She wasn't even able to offer me a bone. While her fellow Meanies pummeled me, she sat motionless. I referred to them as the "trifecta of trouble" in one business. Three wicked ladies who would victimize you ten times over if you attempted to defend yourself. In fact, after an especially unpleasant exchange, I'm positive one of them actually vandalized my vehicle. The Mean Girls occasionally consume their own food. If the group is trapped and there is no way to escape, they will make a blood offering. They typically ignore the individual who is out ill or on vacation; this is always done behind their back.
The girls who don't ask you to the bar after work are the mean girls. They will bare their fangs to make it obvious that you are not welcome if you approach them while they are sipping wine at the neighborhood pub. When you enter the elevator with them and greet them with a positive "Good morning," they remain silent. At meals, refreshment breaks, smoke-os, and social gatherings, they move in groups. There is always a welcome carpet out. Their nails make excellent claws, making them the best tools for backstabbing. You would put bowls of milk on their workstation every morning to serve as a reminder of how catty they are if you didn't worry for your life.
Their ingenuity makes sure they stroke the vanities of the appropriate individuals so they can operate unnoticed. A guardian is always present, and if that protector is lost to the lions, the group rapidly elects a new leader. Usually, someone who is so relieved to no longer be a victim is ready to take the blame when the next "catastrophe" occurs. The mean girls are awful bullies, but nothing seems to be done to stop them, enabling them to carry on with their deplorable actions. Because management doesn't take their concerns seriously, the few people who have stood up to them are either cowering wrecks or quit.
Gail's Gossip, plus one Have a private discussion with Gossiping Gail if you want to circulate knowledge within the company. Is it necessary to disseminate it as quickly as possible? Make it sound secretive. Gossipers frequently lead meaningless lives so they concentrate on those of others. They are the business equivalent of inquisitive journalists, always looking into their coworkers to learn the most recent information. Gails are very imaginative, and if what they have learned isn't rich enough, they are great at embellishing it. Gail is comparable to the six o'clock news. She only emphasizes the negative aspects. She won't utter the words "I'm pregnant" even if you say it with joy. You might as well post it on the company intranet if you inform her you're expecting and thinking about having an abortion.
You will easily identify Gossiping Gail as she rarely speaks at full volume. She communicates the latest news in whispers and appears to have a tick as she constantly checks over her shoulder to make sure no one else hears. Personally, I don't see why she is so worried about who may be standing behind her listening, as she'll eventually tell them anyway. Perhaps she just wants you to think you're getting an exclusive.
Your openness to listening encourages Gail to gossip.
<<<How to handle this situation >>>
Mind In an ideal world, we'd like our coworkers to adhere to the golden rule of "do unto others as you would have them do unto you." Unfortunately, a lot of people don't, so you have to accept that everyone is unique. Make it known to Gossiping Gail that you don't want to talk about that sort of thing if she approaches you. Be polite with the Mean Girls and don't listen to their nonsense for even a second, but other than that, don't engage with them much.
Body Each of these individuals tries to lessen your influence. When speaking with them, there is no time for slouching or doubt. Instead, let your body language convey that you are not someone to fool with. Stand erect and put your shoulders back.
Spirit Since it can be difficult to influence other people's behavior, I advise embracing Reinhold Niebuhr's peace Prayer when interacting with these individuals: "God grant me the serenity to accept the things I cannot change, courage to change the things I can, and wisdom to know the difference."
