A Guide to Keeping Your Towels Squashy

Luxury Towel Bales

By Noah McCarthyPublished 4 years ago 3 min read

If you know how to keep your towel soft even after a couple of washes, believe me, you are the smartest person and save money by not buying a new one after a few washes. Imagine when you come out of your washroom after a nice shower and hug your cosy soft towel. Now imagine the same scenario, but your towel feels like a dry wooden tree bark instead of a soft towel. Water hardness, product quality and improper drying and washing of the towels can lead to such hard towels. To keep the luxury towel bales soft and fluffy, we asked some of the laundry experts their advice and below is what they mentioned:

Wash same stuff together:

If you mix towels with some rough fabric or with the low-quality fabric that loses the colour while washing, this will definitely destroy the colour and quality of your towels.

There is no option, but you have to bear the pain of separately washing them, or you can wash the same kind of stuff altogether. If you wash sheets and towels together, then this is not good for your towels and sheets as well. Sheets dust will mix in water, and that will get stuck in the thick and soft towels, especially if the towels are fresh and new. New towels may give some lint in the beginning, but that is totally fine. You need not worry about that; just wash them separately so that lint does not get stuck on your jeans or shirts.

It does not mean that you put all your towels in a single wash and the rest of the things in a second wash. A lot of towels will get heavier in water and will tangle them, and will create a thick ball that is not washed properly or dried.

Reduce the heat:

Cotton is a soft fabric, and heat is its enemy. If you turn up the heat to kill the germs, then yes, you may succeed in killing germs, but the towel surface will be ruined. It will lose its soft touch and fresh look. It will get hard, and grains on it and can damage the colour of the towel. Always keep the heat (while washing towel) at a medium level to kill germs, and the mist will be removed. If you do not want to heat it, you can use warm water to wash the towels.

If you use warm water to wash the towels, this is good to absorb the detergents, but this will remove the chemical on the towels that keep them long-lasting. This may also make them stiff after some time.

Replace the fibre softener with vinegar:

Fibre softeners will cover the threads of towels, and after some time, it will feel stiffer. The better option is to try vinegar. This will remove the soap and will keep the towels soft. Try this once after every two or three weeks. You do not need to add so much vinegar for this process. One cup will be enough.

Do not store them in stacks:

When you store towels in a stack, this stops the airflow in the towels. Sometimes it makes the towels smelly if they are not opened for more days. And when it is in stacks, that means the lowest towel has more load on it. It will get pressed and will lose its softness. You can get heated towel rails to prevent this kind of issue.

Use the little detergent:

Knowing the correct amount of detergent is very important. If you think the excess detergent will make the towels fresher, then you may be wrong. So much detergent means while washing, much of it can be left in it. A lot of detergents can also fade the colour of your towel and can reduce the lifeline of the towel

Add laundry balls or tennis balls:

If you have some useless tennis balls, well, these are not useless anymore. Put them in the dryer, and they will act as laundry balls. They will remove the lumps from the towel and will help in keeping the towels soft. Other than that, you can get laundry balls specifically designed for this from the market.
