HOW TO CHOSE YOUR SPF

7 Reasons to Wear Sunscreen Every Day
Sunscreen isn’t just for the beach or summer days. Even if you stay indoors most of the time, your skin can still be exposed to ultraviolet radiation (UV) from the sun and its reflection off water, concrete, and other surfaces. Fortunately, there are many reasons to wear sunscreen every day, whether it’s sunny or cloudy outside. Here are seven reasons why you should make sunscreen part of your everyday beauty routine – even if you live in an area with overcast skies most of the year!
We do not apply enough sunscreen
Skin cancer is one of the most preventable forms of cancer, but still affects thousands every year. As such, it's vital that we all make an effort to stay out of the sun between 10 am and 4 pm and wear sunscreen. We've put together a list below outlining seven reasons why you should wear sunscreen every day and how it can benefit your skin, so let's dive in!
1) SPF protects against UV rays. Protecting your skin from UV rays means protecting against skin cancer-- and who doesn't want that?
2) SPF offers more protection than other cosmetics, as it can last for up to 80 minutes outdoors. This offers good coverage if you're exposed sporadically throughout the day. Make sure to reapply often, though-- like after swimming or exercising.
3) SPF helps guard against premature aging by shielding the skin from harmful UVA and UVB rays which break down collagen. Regular use of sunscreen also makes wrinkles less visible due to this protective shield.
4) SPF contains antioxidants which help protect against cellular damage caused by oxidation-causing agents in our environment. These ingredients are beneficial even if they aren't providing full UVA/UVB protection because they offer some level of defense regardless.
Not all sunscreens are created equal
Unfortunately, not all sunscreens are created equal. Choosing the right sunscreen means understanding what you're trying to protect against: UVA rays (skin cancer) and UVB rays (sunburn). Which type of protection you need depends on how you plan on spending your day. There are many SPF levels with various formulations and features that can help find the best sunscreen for your needs. We recommend shopping around in a local store or looking at online reviews until you find something that meets your criteria and make sure to apply 30 minutes before going out into the sun. The more we know about what we put on our skin, the more power we have over preventing potentially life-threatening effects like skin cancer!
The effects of aging
Ageing is a natural process, and it's one that you can't stop or control. The effects of ageing are visible in your skin, hair, and eyes- they can be subtle but they'll happen over time. One way to help slow the ageing process is by wearing sunscreen every day. Some benefits of this include: it protects against sunburns, premature aging such as wrinkles and age spots on the skin, prevents damage from ultraviolet (UV) rays, slows aging of collagen in the skin which helps keep skin firm and less wrinkled.
The Effects of tanning beds
Since tanning beds cause premature aging and skin cancer, it is best not to use them.
1) Tanning beds can make you more sensitive to the sun which means that you may have a more severe reaction if you are exposed in future.
2) People who use tanning beds also have an increased risk of developing melanoma skin cancer.
3) One study found that people who used tanning beds were 15% more likely to develop basal cell carcinoma (BCC). 4) Another study found that using a tanning bed before age 35 led to an 80% increased risk of developing BCC compared with those who never used a tanning bed or had only done so once.
The Effects of smoking
In fact, smoking causes almost 90% of all lung cancer deaths in the U.S. and is one of the leading causes of other major cancers, including cancer of the mouth, throat, voice box, esophagus (food pipe), lungs (including small cell lung cancer), pancreas, kidney and bladder. Plus, cigarettes reduce heart rate and oxygen delivery to cells which can lead to cardiovascular disease or death from respiratory distress.

Tips for buying the right sunscreen
Start by identifying your skin type, skin tone, and the level of sun exposure. Common skin types are dry, oily, or combination. Common skin tones are light, medium, dark brown or black. Make sure to buy a broad spectrum sunscreen that blocks both UVA and UVB rays. Put on at least one ounce 15 minutes before heading outside (about the size of a shot glass). Do not apply around eyes and lips unless directed by your doctor. Ensure that you reapply at least every two hours or more often if you're swimming or sweating heavily.
