Parents, mentors, coaches, and role models are all people we listen to and perhaps emulate.

We want to lead and live a life like them. And in that process, you get muddled. In the pursuit, you become confused. On that journey, you often lose yourself.

There's no one-size-fits-all answer to how to live your best life.

What works for one person may not work for another, and what worked yesterday may not work today. Everyone can do some basic things to increase their chances of living a happy, fulfilling life.

But what are the things a person literally needs to do?

I mean, it's all fine and dandy to hear about it, but what do I physically need to do each and every day to make positive change?

The answer is: it depends.

But before I dive into real-life strategies, it's important to remember that you have the power to change your life for the better. Even if you feel stuck in a rut right now, it's possible to turn things around and start heading down a new path with a bit of effort and creativity.

Figure out who you want to become, then map the steps you need to get there

Are you craving the life of an entrepreneur or founder? Maybe you've dreamt of becoming a top-tier triathlete.

Whatever you're craving to become, understand that the first step is figuring out the steps. Literally figuring out step one, then two, etc. Every life path mandates a set of skills and knowledge, and it's up to you to figure out what those are.

Identify as the person you want to be

Step into the role.

Wake up and see yours;f as that athlete or founder. Sometimes the very first step is belief. Your belief that you can do it.

The biggest battle in becoming who you might become is believing that you can.

So begin the day, the project, the task, or what have you as if you are already that person.

If you run your own business, you're a CEO, no matter how you slice it.

Turning your description of yourself into a positive voice – and dropping the word "trying" – really impacts your mindset.

Start habit stacking – or multitasking

Need to finish that book, but it seems daunting?

You have to hop on the indoor bike trainer for thirty minutes but have lots to do?

The answer is habit stacking, or what some folks call multitasking.

How about getting a book reader and mounting it to the bike while you ride? Or better yet, when you brew your morning cup of Joe, you sit and focus for ten minutes on ten pages?

The point is that the commitment will be easier to make because you are already waiting to get something done. Meaning that you're going to brew the coffee anyway, so why not engage your mind? You're going to hop on the bike anyway, so why not crack that book?

Find your tribe of folks on your journey

Hang around other triathletes.

Find a group or mastermind of other founders.

Once you identify who you want to be, find the folks on that path and stick to them like white on rice.

Being in the company of like-minded individuals can aid you in maintaining a positive outlook and strong mindset.

Get back on the wagon ASAP if you slip

We all slip and fall.

But not all of us get up, dust off, and get back on that wagon.

So you made a mistake. Get over it. Focus on your next move and put that slip behind you. Missed a day of workouts? Hit it hard tomorrow. Didn't close that big client who woulda moved the needle?

Welcome to reality.

Get up, dust off, and look for the next client.

You've worked hard to establish this behavior, so don't let all of your efforts be for naught because you made one simple mistake. It's far easier to get the habit up and running at once than going through everything again months later.

Set concrete goals instead of feel-good words

Finishing an Ironman or creating a million-dollar business are not concrete goals.

They feel good and sound good. Heck, I bet it looks fab as your screensaver or daily mantra taped to your mirror. But the truth is they're flimsy, abstract, and frankly don't lend to creating habits or everyday action items.

They gotta be actionable and realistic for them to be concrete.

Tiny habits are the stepping stones on which we build our lives. If something isn't working for us, or if we're not living our best life, it's time to look at how we may change our little behaviors to get the benefits for which we worked so hard.
