5 Steps to Banish Clutter and Create Harmony in Your Home
Clear Clutter, Clear Mind
A pact, as defined by Dictionary.com, is described as "a formal agreement...such as one between nations."
In this context, I invite you to establish an A-Pact with your clutter. While this may seem more akin to a battle that you ultimately conquer, it serves as a memorable guideline that can assist you in achieving a well-organized space.
Let’s explore what A-Pact signifies and how you can put it into practice...
A-->ASK
Start by posing questions to yourself about what you want to accomplish in the room or area you intend to organize. What goals do you have for this particular space? What are you striving for by seeking an organization?
It’s crucial to explore the deeper benefits you hope to attain. This self-reflection will not only inspire you but also direct you toward your ultimate objective.
For instance, if you’re beginning to sort through paperwork in your home office, consider asking yourself: "What motivates me to organize this area?"
Possible responses might include "I want to ensure I never receive a late bill again" or "I wish to find any document within two minutes." Once you’ve contemplated this question, move on to step 2...
P--->PILE
In this phase, you will gather similar items together. For example, in your closet, create a pile that consists solely of your shirts.
Then, form another pile for all of your pants...
If we transition to your home office (or wherever you keep your paperwork), start with your file drawer, or simply collect everything you have for a "filing system." Organize each piece of paper into "like" categories. For instance, group all insurance documents together. Set aside all 401K paperwork in a separate pile. Keep all medical expenses from the current year in another distinct pile.
A--->ANALYZE
Next, take a closer look at the piles and further categorize them into two groups: "treasure" or "trash." I prefer to label each category as either treasure or trash, eliminating any ambiguity. There should be no "I’ll decide on this later" options.
Make a definitive choice right then and there about whether each item will stay or go. No middle ground.
It’s essential to clarify that "trash" doesn’t necessarily mean it will head straight to the garbage. That step follows next... and remember, one person's trash (or junk) can be another person's treasure.
Next...
C--->CASH-IN
In this step, you will revisit the "trash" pile, determining what can be donated, what can be sold, and what will ultimately go to the dumpster.
The following step is where you truly begin to create order...
T--->TIDY UP!
This is when you will arrange the items you have decided to keep after clearing out all the "trash" from the area.
Tidy up and restore everything to a neat and organized state.
When organizing, ensure that similar items are grouped together, whether on a shelf, in drawers, or in any other storage solution you are utilizing. Position frequently used items in easily accessible locations, making them simple to reach.
And there you have it...
Commit to establishing A-PACT with your clutter today, and embark on your journey towards a more organized and harmonious home!
An alternative that I've used before is to take everything and pack it in boxes. Then, put a "date" on it. Then, put them in a safe with the date facing forward. The date should be a year out once that year has come and gone.
Go grab the box without looking in it and take it to the trash. The reason behind this is, if you haven't opened the box in a year, then you do not need what's in it. After that, do it all over again and see how clutter free you become.
