Change a handful of things to give a room an entirely new look!

By Paisley HansenPublished 6 years ago 3 min read

Renovating a home always sounds like a chore. It conjures up images of entire walls being taken out, of newly-furnished rooms, or new paint and wallpaper throughout the home. But it doesn't have to be that hard. The best way to start renovating your home is by starting small. That way you get something fresh without a ton of effort on your part. You can work your way through the house if you want, or just fix up the problem rooms that have looked the same for years. It's that simple. And sometimes you only need to change a handful of things to give a room an entirely new look.

Change Up the Floors

One of the simplest and most cost-effective ways to give a room a new look is by changing up the floor. It's an easy place to start in any room, and there are a lot of pros and cons to changing this up. You might choose to simply upgrade the floor if it's old and worn, or changing the kind of flooring altogether. For instance, some floors are more suitable for certain rooms. While hardwood flooring is extremely popular right now, carpet is the preferred type of flooring you want in your bedroom. It's not as cold to your feet and you don't have to worry about scratching or slipping. But hardwood and tile are the most common floors for kitchens because of how easy it is to clean up spills and their sleek designs.

This goes along with why floors are the best place to start with renovation projects. Changing up the flooring will transform the rest of the room. You can match it to your walls or have it in the same color palette to make it look more uniform. Or maybe you can just give the room an extra pop of color if everything else is in neutral colors.

Get a New Door

The doors are the first thing most people notice about your house. That means they're the first impression, and you want to make sure that you're making the right one with yours. Doors, especially wooden ones, are particularly susceptible to weather damage. That means chipped or old paint, stains, scratch marks, and other blemishes can easily take over your door's frame without you realizing it. Sometimes a little extra care and a fresh coat of paint can fix the problem. However, there’s nothing wrong with taking a look at some other kinds of doors if you think it’s too far gone at this point. And you don't have to just replace your old door, you can find something new that you'll love walking through every single day.

For instance, if you do have scratch marks on your door, they probably come from some kind of pet. You can fix that problem by getting a heavier door. Steel is a popular choice, and it insulates your home more easily too. There's also glass doors, which are known for their low-maintenance compared to other materials and they make your home look incredibly elegant. These are all great options to make sure that you want to walk through your front door every day.

Updating Your Furniture

Updating furniture doesn't have to be taxing or expensive. The rise of upcycling and diy furniture projects has seen to that. These creative projects allow you to give your own furniture a new look instead of having to buy something else first. And you can restore and repurpose almost any kind of furniture such as china cabinets, desks, tables, and so on. They make really nice conversation pieces and they can easily portray a part of your personality. And there are all sorts of online guides and inspirational pages to give you plenty of ideas.

For example, if you have a workshop or a “man cave” an easy addition you can make is to use old road signs as the base of a table. It gives it a rougher look which is the same kind of environment you want in the room. You could take the slatted pieces from an old lawn chair and use it as a hanging coat rack. All it really takes is a little creativity to see what the possibilities are.
