Your Step-by-Step Guide to Being a Better Author
Improving Your Writing Skills

Many may want to be a good writer, but may not know how to go about improving their writing skills. That doesn't mean, though, that becoming a better writer is necessarily complicated. There can be many ways to help improve your writing skills, and with patience, effort, and a few tips, you can often see the results you want.
Zero In on Your Genre
Whether you're searching for the right agent, or are leaning towards the self publishing route it can be equally important to consider what genre you're interested in and who your audience is. This doesn't mean that you should only write in one genre, but if you are working on a large writing project it can be beneficial to have an idea of who your reader would be. This can help to guide you in your writing and help you decide what markets you should send your book to.
Read Before You Write
One thing that many must do before they begin writing is reading. By spending time reading, you can expose yourself to new and varied writing forms and ideas. The more you read, the more you can learn about how other authors construct their books, and can gain more knowledge about how to write your own. Not only can being widely read help to expose you to new ideas, but it can help improve your vocabulary and spelling, too.
Make It a Daily Ritual
Although it may sound ironic, one of the biggest things that would-be writers struggle with is writing. Many may enjoy thinking about writing or even come up with plot ideas and characters, but find themselves struggling to sit down and type them out. While it may be enjoyable to spend time thinking about the things you would like to write, one of the most important steps towards becoming a published author is making sure that you write everything down. Because of this, establishing a daily ritual and requiring yourself to meet a quota can be a helpful way to keep yourself on track, and to make sure that your words are getting put down on paper, and not just staying inside your head.
Be Prepared for Criticism
Writing can be a lot of work, and the stories you write can feel very personal to you. However, when it comes to writing professionally, you are likely to experience some rejection or criticism at one point or another, no matter how good your writing is. Criticism may not be pleasant to receive, but the reality is that taking note of criticisms and using them to improve your writing can be beneficial in the long run.
Write What You Want
Another important thing to keep in mind is that you should write for yourself. While it might be tempting to write things that you think will make you money, or to try a genre just because it is popular, the truth is that you may find it more difficult to write about something when your heart is not fully in it. Additionally, your best writing will often happen when you are writing about topics that are meaningful and interesting to you. Although you may think or feel that others might not find it as interesting as you do, you will never know for sure unless you put the stories you care about out into the world.
The Final Word
Writing can be a fulfilling hobby, and potential career as well. There are many who are interested in improving their writing skills, but may not be sure how to start.
Although the task of improving your writing may seem like a daunting one, there can be many approaches to giving your writing skills a boost. This can be true whether you focus on becoming more well read, or make a serious effort to write a certain amount of words every day. With some effort and patience, great changes can be possible.
