Words are awesome, so are photos

The start of this journey

A beach on an island in Kavieng, New Ireland, in Papua New Guinea.

Hello. I am Thomas, and I currently live in Adelaide, in South Australia. I have been here for two years now, and I am really enjoying it here.

I am originally from Papua New Guinea (PNG), which is just north of Australia.

I write about many different topics, including articles about places and those are accompanied by photos that I take.

Did you see the photo that I have up there?

The photo above is that of a beach on an island in Kavieng, in New Ireland, an island province in PNG. I lived there for 3 years before coming down here to Adelaide to do a master's degree at the oldest university in South Australia.

There are many such beautiful beaches in PNG and I will share more photos of beautiful spots in PNG with you in the future.

Here in Adelaide we have good beaches too, places that one can visit on the weekend, afternoons or mornings for a quiet time for a jog, a walk, or just to relax. Or, for those who are spiritual, such places could be nice places to go and find a bench and sit down and say a prayer.

I will share more about Adelaide in future pieces.

I am an educator and a freelance journalist. I like taking my small digital camera with me wherever I go. I have a background in science and mathematics though, having a bachelor’s degree in that field. I also studied education for a year and obtained a diploma, so I like discussing topics in education as well.

After teaching for many years, I left the classroom and started working in the newsroom. I worked for a newspaper for seven years and then left again for the classroom. It was from the classroom that I got back into the lecture room as a postgraduate program in media.

I had to fly down to South Australia, about 3000 kilometres away from where I was in late 2019. I flew from Port Moresby, the PNG capital, to Brisbane in Australia, which took 3 hours. Then I got on another plane from Brisbane and travelled further south to Adelaide, the capital of South Australia.

When I am not completely swamped with academic studies, I write fiction, like short stories and scripts, and also learn one or two things in music. I completed an eight-week piano sight-reading program recently, that is to get back to the piano basics that I learned many years ago. Then I also signed up for an eight-week violin program.

Sadly, I had to quit that program because I needed all the time to complete my final research project in my studies. I may pick up on that program a bit later.

I will share some tips on learning to play a musical instrument later. For your information, the music programs I signed up with had many older students, people in their 60s and 70s who want to work on a new set of skills.

For the piano program, some of the female students told me that they were using the instruments that they had bought for their children many years ago. Once, their children were the students of the instrument. Now, they were the students of it.

After all these years of writing feature stories and some creative fiction, I have concluded that "good words and good photos do have a therapeutic effect on people", those who are usually stressed out with the daily grind of monotonous routine stuff.

Sure, music too is another medium where we can find that space to relax.

And, I will share more of my ideas and views about different topics with you all in the future.

My interest areas are in maths, science, physics, education, media, journalism, photography, music and creative fiction.

Cheers.
