Why You Will Fall In Love With Remote Working
Remote work is on the rise with more companies allowing their teams to work flexibly.
With more and more companies allowing their teams to work flexible hours, it’s clear remote working is on the rise. Of course, the ability to work from home has been possible for years but working remotely full-time is certainly becoming more mainstream than ever before.
One of the most popular reasons people want a remote job is it offers them a flexible lifestyle. For me, it allows me the freedom to plan my own day, which means my career and personal life can coexist — it’s my newfound freedom.
It’s honestly the best step I’ve made, there is no way I will be heading into an office any time soon that’s for sure. I’ve met likeminded people who have the same passions and motivations. I’ve learnt a lot about many cultures and religions. I mostly slow travel, where I will stay put in a place for 2-3 months... I've found this really helps me emerge in the local cultures, really feel apart of the particular city I'm living in at that time. Plus it gives me time to make friends too.
To give you an example of how varied my days can be, I recently spent my morning before starting work, chatting to 2 monks in Chiang Mai, Thailand. Today, I’m writing this from a cute balcony in Barcelona, with the sun shining down on my face.
To work remotely, you need endless self-motivation and determination. There is no one checking what time I started work or checking how long I took for lunch. I work the hours I work because I enjoy what I do. You need to be able to manage your time and adapt.
Becoming location independent is a major shift in life but here’s why working remotely works for me:
No more commute
This means no more morning rush-hour commute on the London underground. I’d usually spend 1 hour travelling to work which now leaves me with a spare 2 hours each day, to do whatever I want — I usually read, exercise, write, or practise Spanish.
Create my own schedule
This gives me the freedom to split my day up how I like. I can do my food shopping at 3 pm on a Tuesday afternoon rather than a Saturday morning, avoiding the crowds as much as possible. Who wants to go grocery shopping on a Saturday morning with EVERYONE else?
Travel where I want, whenever I want
Freedom calls me everyday - I can literally be wherever I want for however long I want. So long as I’ve got a great wi-fi connection, the world will forever be my oyster. How do you like the sound of that?
Stay More Focused
Being in control of my routine, allows me to limit my distractions. I'm able to do whatever I want before starting work. Once I do get settled, I don’t have co-workers stopping by my desk for a 'quick question', 30 minutes later and we’re totally off track. Now, I just need to switch off my notifications and I’m able to buckle down and focus a lot easier than working in an office. The Do Not Disturb feature on my iPhone will forever be my lifelong hack of not getting distracted.
Wear what I want
I used to hate spending my mornings, waking up early in anticipation of being indecisive on an outfit suitable for the office. Now I just wear whatever I want. And yes, it has been known for me to stay in my PJ’s all day! Hasn’t everyone at some point? (It’s awful practice, I wouldn’t recommend this at all, but everyone has their down days).
Well... whilst we are here being honest, theres also been days where I've taken a mid-day nap, they are THE best. Nothing feels more refreshing than waking up after a 20 minute power nap, ready to power through the afternoon.
If you’re feeling on the fence about making the jump into the remote life then I hope these reasons have made you want to start looking for a remote job.
Your future office could be anywhere you want it to be, so where's it going to be?
If you are working remotely, what is it that YOU love about the lifestyle?
