Vocal is an extremely underrated writing platform. I love writing short fiction. Writing short fiction and the six hundred minimum word count for Vocal stories is a perfect platform to publish my short stories. I was not sure about Vocal at first but once I received my first payment from them, I was hooked. I was a bit annoyed at first because of the 35 dollars withdrawal minimum threshold. My biggest saving grace was top story bonuses. The bonuses were five dollars a pop. Seven Top Stories and I was ready to cash out. I withdrew my cash to stripe on December 22nd. I was hoping to have the money by Christmas but did not receive the money in my bank account until after the holidays. While I was annoyed not to get the money until after Christmas; I was able to start the New Year getting paid to write. It started my year off right.
My productivity has gone way up. I have already won a Top Story Honor this year, for my story “The Girl.” I need six more Top Stories until I hit the minimum 35 dollars threshold once again. The Vocal writing community is extremely supportive and friendly. It is encouraging to receive such positive feedback for my work. With so much negativity in the world it is nice to see a community of writers and readers like the ones at Vocal that seem to care so much. Posting on Vocal has been a game changer for me. I genuinely look forward to publishing my work here and seeing the positive comments on my work. I have a goal to get a top bonus story with every article I publish on Vocal. Does it happen? No. However, what do I do when a story doesn’t win Top Story? I write another story.
John Voorhause is a former writer of Married With Children. He wrote a book called The Comedy Toolbox and in it he wrote about the rule of nine. For every ten jokes you tell, nine won’t work. John talked about how liberating that was because how much of your ego do you have to place in a joke if you tell one joke? One hundred percent and if it doesn’t land you experience; it’s total ego death. If you tell ten jokes you only risk ten percent of your ego being strained at a time. The same applies to writing on Vocal. I knew I had to write seven stories that won Top Story to achieve my seven Top Story goal this year. I have written well over seven stories and published them on Vocal. Only one of my stories this year has won Top Story. Like a comedian telling jokes I have to keep writing stories and publishing them to Vocal to get paid again. You can’t stress about what may or may not connect with a reader. Productivity is the name of the game. I have ramped up my productivity in order to chase another $5 bonus. Each time one of my stories wins Top Story honor I ask myself:
“Why did this particular story win?” My best stories seem to be my most creative ones. I was once deemed a “well of creativity” by a College Professor. My technique in his class was the same as my technique I use with Vocal. Write another and show the next one.
John Carpenter said something very similar about film making.
“If you want to be a director you have to start making movies. Make it great, get it shown, and make another one.” The articles are so short it helps me flex a writing muscle that I have developed pretty well; it’s the miniaturization muscle. A novel is a big clunky work where it is about expanding and ballooning into a larger text. It is not so with short form content. In short stories you have to choose which specific details to include and which ones to exclude. I like that Vocal is so diverse. There are so many niches to choose from. It is also easy to navigate. Some platforms might be a little hard to navigate, but not Vocal. I’m honing my craft while also having fun publishing my work on Vocal. I can write articles, poetry, and fiction; I can even write fan fiction.
I am obsessed with the Halloween Franchise. I have even published a couple short stories, fan fiction, for the Halloween Franchise. Even knowing I have the opportunity to publish fan fiction for this franchise gives me joy! It added another possibility to my writing journey which is writing for a big horror franchise. That never would have been possible without Vocal! I like Vocal because I can publish a lot of different articles and poems very quickly. I like getting a bunch of different ideas out in front of an audience. The objective is to see which stories and articles and poetry resonates with people. Vocal holds me accountable. It lets me know which stories are Top Story worthy and which ones are not. The top story elements are always more engaging in imagination, characters, and storytelling than the ones that did not win Top Story. I see me continuing writing on the platform. I thank the creators for giving us such an underrated platform.
