Bitty Schram as Sharona Fleming on the TV series Monk (still from 2005) As Adrian Monk’s devoted nurse and assistant, she played a central part in assisting him with cases while coping with his obsessive-compulsive disorder (O.C.D.).

But in season 3 of the series, Sharona suddenly exited the show, leaving an audience perplexed and brokenhearted. When Monk calls her, she's not ashamed of helping with his case, but she's not interested in being more than that because she's moved on. Let’s find out.

The Role of Sharona in Monk

Sharona Fleming was introduced as Monk’s “no-nonsense” and “headstrong” nurse who assisted him when he put his detective skills to work. Sharona had no fear of challenging Monk, something that other characters never had, and it made their relationship all the more compelling.

She became a stabilizing force in Monk’s life, often requiring him to confront his fears, and to continue in his detective work, even with his OCD. She was a single parent raising her son Benjy and working, bringing an authenticity and salt-of-the-earth quality to her character.

Sharona proved a key fixture in Monk’s life, and her no-nonsense way often grounded him. She was never afraid to call him out on his eccentricities or push him toward risk. Viewers loved the chemistry between the characters (and many felt the same), and Sharona was seen as a grounding force to Monk’s more extreme characteristics. So her departure was big for both the story and the audience.

Why Did Sharona Leave Monk?

Sharona’s abrupt exit from Monk wasn’t due to a plot line, but rather behind-the-scenes drama. The actress who played Sharona, Bitty Schram, departed the show because of contract disputes. Schram allegedly asked producers for a pay raise but was unable to negotiate properly. As a result, her character was dismissed from the series without much explanation and was replaced by Natalie Teeger (played by Traylor Howard).

The producers of Monk chose to take the character dynamics in a different direction, and although Natalie was laced with a more nurturing and calming vibe, some fans found her to be too different than Sharona and did not appreciate what happened to the character (to be fair, Monk ended with a very rewarding conclusion for many characters, and they did manage to send Sharona off, even if they did so at a time that made sense with the plot). Schram’s departure may have seemed abrupt, but it boiled down to a simple lack of financial agreement — she wanted better pay that the show simply didn’t have in the budget.

How Did the Show Explain Sharona’s Departure?

The storyline revealed that she had returned to New Jersey to marry her ex — “the love of my life” — and begin anew.

The explanation, while simple and clean, left fans wondering why, and if it was always planned, the beloved character had to leave. The switch to Natalie was a bit smoother, but fans were skeptical about the new relationship.

How Did Fans React to Sharona Leaving?

Here are some concepts that you can apply to this format: Sharona left the series, and viewers felt betrayed, so they had no real replacement. Many had come to care for her character, and thought her exit created a hole in Monk’s life. Social media was buzzing with responses to the cameo, with many viewers saying they would love to see Sharona back.

While Natalie would eventually turn into a well-loved character in her own right, some viewers never flipped and preferred Sharona’s no-nonsense approach and the specific chemistry she had with Monk.

Among the responses was one from joins who felt that Monk’s character evolution was compromised by Sharona’s absence. Without her bracing presence, some insisted Monk became more timid and less adventurous, even needy. Natalie had been supportive and nice but the no-nonsense, tough-love dynamic that characterized Sharona’s character and the defining, albeit fraught, relationship in the first series was not present.
