As a mom, I know how different traveling with kids can feel compared to solo or adult-only trips. When my family and I first planned our Morocco adventure, I had one big question: When is the best time to visit Morocco with kids?

I quickly realized that Morocco’s climate and rhythms vary so much by region that timing can make or break a family trip. Let me share what we learned the good, the challenging, and the surprisingly magical moments.

Our Family Trip: February vs. April

We started our trip in February, landing in Marrakech. I thought the mild winter would be perfect, but Morocco surprised us. Days were comfortable, around 18°C, but nights in the desert were freezing the kids shivered despite extra blankets. The Atlas Mountains were stunning with snowy peaks, but the chilly air made long hikes tricky for our youngest.

A few months later, we returned in April, and the difference was night and day. Days were warmer (around 22–26°C), evenings pleasant, and our kids could play outside without bundling up in layers. The desert was still cool enough to enjoy camel rides, and mountain roads were clear and easy to navigate. That’s when I realized: spring is the sweet spot for a family trip.

What Worked Best for Our Kids

Through trial and error, I learned that traveling with children in Morocco is all about balance:

City Days: Marrakech and Fes were best in the mornings, when the kids had energy. We explored souks, palaces, and medinas in a relaxed pace, with plenty of breaks at cafés or riads.

Desert Days: Camel rides and campfires were highlights. We avoided midday sun, and cozy tents with blankets kept everyone comfortable at night.

Mountain Days: Atlas treks were short and guided. Kids loved spotting snow and running through streams without feeling exhausted.

Even small details mattered a few snacks, water bottles, and layers for changing temperatures made a huge difference.

Avoiding Extreme Weather

From experience, I’d advise families to avoid the peak of summer (July–August) unless your kids can handle high heat. Marrakech can soar above 40°C, desert nights remain surprisingly warm, and little ones can get easily fatigued.

Winter (December–February) works if you’re prepared for cold nights, especially in the desert and mountains. Coats, hats, and warm layers are essential.

For families like ours, the best combination of weather, comfort, and kid-friendly adventure is usually:

March–May (Spring): Mild temperatures, clear skies, and manageable crowds

September–October (Autumn): Warm days, cooler evenings, and vibrant landscapes

Tips for Visiting Morocco With Kids

Pack layers: From T-shirts to jackets, the weather can change quickly.

Plan shorter travel days: Kids get tired fast, especially on long drives.

Book desert stays with heating: A little warmth goes a long way at night.

Mix indoor and outdoor activities: Cooking classes, pottery workshops, or museums are lifesavers on hot or cold days.

Stay hydrated and snack smart: Marrakech medina walks are exciting but can be exhausting.

The Magic of Traveling With Kids in Morocco

Despite the challenges, traveling with our children in Morocco was unforgettable. Their excitement when seeing camels in the desert, spotting snow in the mountains, or tasting fresh mint tea for the first time was priceless.

Timing our trip during spring months made it smooth and enjoyable, letting the kids explore without fatigue or discomfort. Now, when friends ask me “When is the best time to visit Morocco with kids?”, I don’t hesitate: spring or early autumn, hands down.

Final Thoughts

Morocco is a country full of surprises colorful markets, golden deserts, snow-capped mountains, and warm, welcoming people. When you travel with kids, timing matters more than anything else. With a little planning, flexible itineraries, and the right season, Morocco becomes a magical playground where your children can explore, learn, and create memories you’ll treasure forever.
