WHAT THE WORLD DOESN’T UNDERSTAND ABOUT CREATIVE PEOPLE
AND WHAT CREATIVE PEOPLE DON’T UNDERSTAND ABOUT THEMSELVES.
When you sit with soft eyes gazing at a dewdrop, when you listen with soft ears to bird song, when you contemplate the beauty of sunlight creating a shimmering nimbus around a young pine in dappled woodland, you are available to catch ideas sent from the universe like dandelion seeds!
And creative people NEED ideas. Granted, many of us overflow with ideas, but it’s better to have a whole bunch to choose from, rather than zilch. Right?
The problem is how the world sees us, when we are hunter gathering our ideas. And very often, how we see ourselves.
How many creatives out there feel guilty for daydreaming, for taking time to flip ideas around, for taking time out to rest because you have exhausted your brain?
And how many feel guilty for doing this important ‘WORK’ because to the rest of the world it just seems like laziness?
The world fails to recognise when a creative is working and when they are resting, because it doesn’t make sense to the logical mind and to the industrious society we live in.
So here is a quick explanation so you never get it wrong again.
When a creative person LOOKS like they are resting, they are in fact working. When a creative person looks like they are working, they are in fact resting.
I can see your frowns…especially you writers that know how infuriating it can be to sit and write!
Let me explain further.
It takes a lot of TIME to come up with your ideas to write, your images to draw, to frame the picture to photograph in your mind, to understand your invention. That’s because the idea itself is only the beginning. Once you grab an idea from the air, you must mould it into some sort of shape so you can bring it into form. You cannot do that if you are occupying your mind with other things. So, the real work is done while you seem to be doing very little to anyone else.
Once you have worked it all out with the mind, you can then breathe the whole thing out onto paper, or film, or sculpt it, dance it, act it…. whatever this idea needs to be. This often feels like a great sigh, a sense of upmost relief and pleasure. It allows you to relax once more, which is what most people think of as ‘rest’.
The biggest problem creators have is the battle with their own guilt, brought upon by a society that judges people who look like they are doing nothing. This guilt might not stop you sitting back and allowing space for ideas to form, but it will mean there is a constant battle going on in the background while you do it. You may grab moments when no one is looking. You may pretend to be doing something productive, while your mind tries to work on your idea. All of these things actually stop the flow of the imagination, and so your idea, while there, will never be allowed to truly form.
This often shows up when you sit to write that story, or paint that picture, and instead stare at the blank screen or blank canvas, not knowing how it begins.
I can assure you; you don’t have to force any idea into form IF you deal with the guilt and ALLOW yourself the time to play in the sandbox of your imagination, fully immersed in the experience.
You will know when you are ready to let it all out because you will feel like you cannot hold it in any longer. And then once you sit to create, you will become lost in the world of your imagination, as your idea flows into form like one long out breath. Time will become meaningless, and you will reside in pure bliss. When you are finished you will feel that intense satisfaction that comes with deep relaxation and rest.
If you are not a creative person (although I think we all are), then spare a thought for that friend, partner, family member that is. Don’t bully them into what you think of as work. Instead realise that the blank stare, the lack of response to your questions, are signs of someone working really hard. Make them a cup of tea, do the chores they haven’t managed to fit into their busy day. Grab the kids and take them out of the house. Allow them the time they need. And support them in every way that you would support someone who spends every hour in the office, working their socks off to make ends meet.
The world needs creative people now more than ever.

This is super relatable!
This makes so much sense! Once again Kirsten has me looking at things from a new angle and recognizing how this fits me. Another Aha! Moment. When the brain is busy and stressed and rushed it is so much harder to get my planning done and idea brainstorming or writing projects going. I do best with a weekend day that has quiet time to regroup from the week, and without realizing it I’ve been refilling / unblocking my creative energies this way. 🤩❤️
