When do you first decide what to do with your life?
When you are little every teacher you have must ask you the question of who do you want to be when you grow up? Unfortunately, our small little brains either say what our parents do for work or go way out there and say we want to be a doctor or a pilot. I wish we still believed in ourselves as much as we did when we were younger. As we grow up and get older we start to think about the things we enjoy doing most like hanging out with friends, playing our favorite sport, or watching our favorite shows. We don’t think about our future until towards our last year of high school. In high school there are many programs you can apply to including medical, auto, graphic design, and so much more. Here is where you decide what field of work you would enjoy.
Decisions in College
Once college starts is the time you crack down on deciding what career you want in life. Now this will most likely change by the time you are done with your associates of arts degree which is your first two years of college if you never did duel enrollment in high school but that is okay. I know that my major has changed three times within those two years. You might have chosen the field you enjoy but weren’t too sure of the job you wanted in that field. There are so many choices and sometimes you have to try some to see what you really enjoy. You also have to think about your income, to see if that job is worth working for the rest of your career and that you are able to live comfortably not paycheck to paycheck.
During College
While in college you will first have to go through the basic "core" classes like math, writing, reading, science, and public speaking. Some of these will be quite easy while others are a little tricky. These classes have nothing to do with your major, but everyone has to start somewhere I guess. Some students are full time and do not work while they go to school and other like me work while they take their college courses. In a way working has helped me through college in many ways. For example, I am not drowning in debt, I have money to live a life outside of work and school, and it gives me prior experience when applying for jobs in the future. The only thing to worry about when working while going to college is that you need to find a job that works with your school schedule and for me that was a restaurant because they were only open in the evening so that I could take morning classes. It didn't have the best hours or the best pay, but it got me by until I wanted to move on from hospitality to the field I've always wanted to be in, medicine.
Finding A Job
This is definitely the hard part. Once I quit the restaurant and decided I want to do something in the field my dream job is in, I hit a wall. Looking for a job especially in the small town I live in can be difficult. When I tell you, I have applied to a dozen and more places I am not joking. When you are still in college not necessarily full time and have bills to pay it can be very stressful finding a job let alone one that pays well. When you're in college all you think about is the day you graduate with your degree and get to work the dream job you have always wanted but then there is the time in between where time moves slowly and you feel like your dream job is so far away.
The Part Where You Hope and Pray
When you hit this wall in your life, it is time to hope and pray for the best. I pray that I find a job quickly. I hope I get a job that pays well. I pray this job I get will make me happy. And on it goes, but one day your dream job will come. One day all your dreams will come true whether that be owning your dream home and car or going on a vacation you have always wanted. The part that is hard and hurts sometimes is waiting.
