What is Grand-Millenial Style Home Decor?
Granny-Chic, Cottagecore, what is this new style of grand millennial?

There are some new trends in home decor one that is growing in popularity is called the grand millennial style. This is also sometimes referred to as 'granny chic'. In short, it means a resurgence of what was once considered old now being trendy and cool. Instead of feeling like it is old, it is more of a focus on those things that are cozy and comforting.
This interior design style combines vintage, homey elements with modern touches to create space that feels both stylish and nostalgic. This can draw inspiration from traditional design and add in a bit of whimsey. The goal is for comfort, charm and character without crossing into clutter or kitchy.
The most notable attributes of this trend are items like bold floral wallpapers, antiques, and pretty much any type of floral anywhere. But today’s trends are carrying a twist on these old comfort classics with contemporary palettes and modern spins. This can also be called "cottagecore" or maximalist trend as it offers cozy and expressive design celebrating the traditional old-fashioned look without being outdated.

Here are some of the most popular attributes of the grand millennial decorating trend
Florals: bold florals are popping up everywhere. Most popular is in accent wallpaper paired with more contemporary or modern furniture. Think of it as more of a backdrop to the room than the overall design statement that the room makes as it did a few decades ago. Floral chintz patterns are also popular in small doses like accent pillows.
Fringe and tassel trim: It was once a thing of many decades ago but is now emerging on furniture like sofas, especially in trim and throw pillows. This adds a softness, movement and a handmade feel to the room. This can be implemented on throw pillows, curtain and lampshades. Tassels on drawer pulls is also a bit whimsical as is a fringed throw draped over a floral armchair.
Patterned wallpaper: Much like the bold walls we may have expected to find at grandma’s house are large print wallpapers that make a big statement in a room. The most popular of large patterns include geometric shapes, flowers, and things like toile. All things you might expect to find in an antique setting.

Wicker and Bamboo: furnishings that feature a lattice, bamboo, or wicker are coming back around from their once-popular days in the 1970s. One of the most trendy ways in which this is coming back is with woven inserts in cabinet doors to give that retro look to certain pieces of furniture.
Vintage or with a vintage feel: Cathy Counti, Lee's Summit REALTOR offers her advice on Vintage: "Full focus of the grand millennial style trend is around making the old new and cool again. It’s about appreciating the beauty in antique and vintage looks from the not-too-distant past. There is even a pick-up in the popularity of using ancient Greek statues as décor accents. You might be surprised what will pass as "granny chic" that you can pick up for pennies at your local Thrift Store. "
Fancy crystal chandeliers: bringing in some bling to dress up your light fixtures is another way to grab onto the trend. More and more crystal chandeliers are found all throughout homes being updated. They are even being spotted inside bathrooms. These are easily found at refurbished style stores like Re-Style, Habitat for Humanity, and thrift stores.
Now, if you go a bit overboard, you ARE going to look like grandma's house in the 1970s, so go easy. Add in a piece here or there until the area looks modern and yet intentionally granny chic. Using these features strategically can bring warmth and personality without making the space feel cluttered or outdated. That is the key here.
The nice thing about this trend is that items do not have to be brand new in order to be trendy. You could easily find a piece that is authentically antique or retro and do a little work to make it feel brand new and modern. There are several “ugly” pieces of furniture in thrift stores, antique malls, estate sales, etc., that are just waiting to become the most talked-about and trendy pieces in your home. Who knows, you may just find a piece that transforms into that favorite family heirloom.
