Vocal’s Edit Features

The advantage of having new edit features on Vocal

By Joe PattersonPublished about a year ago Updated about a year ago 3 min read

So yesterday I was just chillin on Vocal writing a story, which is a little thing I like to do most days, and something magical happened. First off, don’t ponder on what I was writing, that’s neither here nor there, the punchline is what happened after my story was published. Now one thing you should know about me is I’m a capable writer, but I’m also a messy writer. Don’t be so judgmental if you read this, I hear all great minds are messy people. So when I’m writing I find myself having made a lot of grammatical errors when I go back review my published works.

The thing about this proof reading session is it was unlike any other time before and that’s not me being dramatic. When I went back and started editing I found that I was able to edit two things about my stories that I was never able to edit before and that’s the title and the subtitle. So Vocal has now open the editing features to allow us to modify our titles and subtitles and I honestly couldn’t be happier. As a matter of fact, I think everybody in the Vocal community couldn’t be happier. Why is this such a big deal you might ask?

When I first joined Vocal over two years ago I was very pleased that I now had a writing platform to express myself, but I was a little underwhelmed that the edit feature la wouldn’t allow me to edit my title or subtitle after they were submitted. For someone like me this is a pretty big deal considering that I am, well, a messy writer who can be very sloppy, so Vocal definitely encouraged me to be sharper about proof reading. At the same time I knew I was eventually gonna slip up and make some titles/subtitle errors and sure enough I was the case.

Now it’s not really over dramatic to say that not being able to edit a title really irks a writer’s nerve, especially when you’re an unintended perfectionist like myself. Though it only happened twice I really was bothered when I published a those stories with title errors and I wasn’t able to go back and fix them. I don’t know how else to describe it other than it just kinda made me feel incomplete. Almost like I committed a deadly sin or something. Sure it’s not that big a deal, but it really is an unnecessary grievance. Though it taught me a valuable lesson about proof reading I still hoped for a day when Vocal would advance to letting us edit our titles and subtitles.

All praises to the most high that the day when we can edit our titles has finally arrived. I think this will be great for us as writers because it not only allows us to edit our mistakes from before, but it also allows us to make some necessary changes of the heart. Sometimes we seek to edit certain details not because we made a mistake, but because we had a change in preference for a title we wanted to give a story. I could spend all the time in the world coming up with a title for my story and be so sure that it’s the one I wanted, but I might read over that story a few days, maybe even a few weeks later and feel a desire to wanna change the name of the story. I’ve definitely had those feelings here on Vocal and though they’re not as problematic as the mistakes they do still come to mind every now and then.

Interestingly enough the features even allow us to delete stories. Not that I necessarily have any stories that I wanna delete, but if did then this new feature definitely comes in hand. I’m pretty sure plenty of other writers in our community have stories that they would rather not have present on their profile for whatever reason.

Along with being able to edit the titles and delete stories we can also change our cover photos which is also a big plus because you might think you like a certain photo today, but tomorrow after your story is published and realize you want something else. With these new features it looks like that won’t be a problem. So to whoever is in charge on the Vocal committee that implemented these changes, I send my sincerest thanks for evolving this platform in a way that further helps us along as writers.

WOW! I have had the the need to ‘make some necessary changes of the heart’ many a time and the response time from Vocal+ Support had been a week or more to return to ‘Drafts.’ Distressing as the clock ticks down on a Challenge for instance. The ‘locked down’ feature I presumed was because of the unique URL. Change cover photos and delete stories! Thank you for this update Joe! And indeed Vocal+ Pauline 🌸

The new features are cool. I like being able to delete stories that are not so suitable too.
