Entrepreneurship is challenging for everyone, but women tend to face some unique challenges along the way. Entering into the male-dominated business world and launching a successful venture isn’t easy. Many existing processes, institutions, and expectations add extra hurdles for women with great business ideas. However, many admirable women have taken these challenges head-on and built extraordinary ventures in spite of every limitation they ran into. There are some unique challenges female entrepreneurs face.

Confidence

Walking into a boardroom full of men as a woman entrepreneur can be intimidating. If you aren’t confident in yourself, your abilities, and your business, it’s easy to feel defeated. A lack of confidence is a substantial challenge women must overcome to launch a successful startup. If you aren’t confident, your investors, colleagues, and other stakeholders won’t be confident in your venture.

Respect

Unfortunately, some women find that they are not respected or taken seriously as entrepreneurs. This can be a difficult challenge to overcome, as you can’t control what other people think about you. However, you can go above and beyond in your work, clearly demonstrating your capabilities and not being afraid to take your business elsewhere if you aren’t welcomed.

Funding

Another problematic hurdle many females in entrepreneurship face is securing funding. The statistics are not in your favor if you need investors to get your business off the ground. Less than three percent of venture funding businesses have female CEOs, so it is a very male-dominated industry. Recently, however, investors who are dedicated to supporting female-owned companies have become more popular. Nevertheless, women must work extra hard to write impeccable business plans and convince investors they are worth the funds.

Perfectionism

There can be a lot of pressure on female entrepreneurs to be successful. This can lead to unreasonable feelings of perfectionism, which can cause overworking and burnout. While entrepreneurship is demanding, women need to take care of themselves and be willing to fail. There is no perfect business and no way to be an entrepreneur without risk.

Connections

Entrepreneurs need a support network to survive. However, women have a harder time finding mentors and advisors than their male counterparts. This can lead to additional challenges and fewer available resources. Some areas host female-focused networking events, which can be great opportunities to make valuable connections and collect advice from women who are already well-connected in the business world.

Stereotypes

Many harmful stereotypes about women are still pervasive in the world of business, which can cause additional challenges for entrepreneurs. Investors might perceive women as too emotional or less steady, unable to drive a company to success. These expectations can lead women to emulate more stereotypically male leadership styles to gain respect. While this may work for some investors, staying true to yourself and proving skeptics wrong by building a successful business without them is far more profitable.

Balance

Work-life balance can be challenging for everyone, but especially for women who still face higher expectations regarding responsibilities with their homes and families. It can be challenging to feel like your business is taking time away from your children. However, giving time to your passions and interests is essential. While finding a healthy work-life balance can be challenging, especially in the busy early stages of a startup, many successful female entrepreneurs can attest that running a business does not have to mean sacrificing all of your family time.

While the business climate is slowly changing and creating more opportunities for women to succeed, there are still unique challenges women must overcome in entrepreneurship. These are some of the most common ones to be prepared for when considering launching your startup. They might sound intimidating. However, many women have paved the way and provided examples of success despite the odds.
