Unexpected Lessons My Kids Taught Me About Success
Success is one of those things we tend to overcomplicate. We chase big goals, analyze strategies, and sometimes stress ourselves out trying to make everything perfect. But kids? They have a way of cutting through the noise and showing us what truly matters.
I learned this lesson the day my daughter set up a lemonade stand.
The Big Business Plan (or Lack Thereof)
One summer afternoon, my daughter decided she wanted to sell lemonade. There was no elaborate business plan, no overthinking—just pure excitement. She grabbed a marker, made a sign, and set up a small table in our front yard.
At first, I did what any business-minded mom would do. I started offering "suggestions."
"Do you have enough ice? Maybe we should print a better sign? What about different cup sizes?"
She looked at me, puzzled. "Mom, I just want to sell lemonade."
And just like that, she got started. No perfectionism, no waiting for the "right time," just action. I stood back and watched as she poured her first cup with the biggest smile on her face.
As cars passed by, she waved enthusiastically, calling out, "Lemonade! Ice-cold lemonade!" She wasn’t worried about rejection, competition, or whether someone thought her stand was too simple. She was just having fun. And guess what? People responded.
Some stopped just because they saw how happy she was. Others handed her extra money, saying they admired her effort. One woman even came back a second time, laughing as she told my daughter, "Your lemonade is the best part of my day."
Meanwhile, I had spent weeks second-guessing my own business ideas, wondering if they were "ready" enough. My daughter had taken action in a single afternoon and found success in the simplest way possible—by showing up and bringing joy to the process.
Learning to Let Go of Perfection
Watching her, I realized how much I had been overcomplicating things. If you wait until everything is perfect, you'll never start. Sometimes, the best strategy is just to take the first step.
I thought back to all the times I had delayed launching a new project or making a career move because I felt like I wasn’t fully prepared. I had researched endlessly, tweaked plans, and hesitated, waiting for some magical sign that it was the "right time." But here was my daughter, taking action without fear or hesitation. She wasn’t caught up in the "what ifs"—she was focused on the now.
And that was when it hit me. She wasn’t just selling lemonade. She was embodying a mindset that so many of us lose as we grow older—the ability to trust ourselves and take action without overthinking.
The Simple Joy of Showing Up
That evening, as we sat together counting her earnings, she was beaming. "Mom, I think I want to do this again tomorrow! Maybe we can even make cookies too."
There was no stress about whether her stand had been successful enough or if she needed to change her strategy. She was just excited to try again. And honestly, I envied that mindset.
How many times do we chase success while forgetting to enjoy the journey? How often do we measure our progress in numbers and overlook the moments of joy along the way? My daughter wasn’t worried about maximizing profits or scaling her business. She was just thrilled that she had done something she loved and connected with people in the process.
That night, I made a promise to myself. I would stop waiting for the perfect moment. I would start showing up, just like my daughter had that day. Not with a flawless plan or endless preparation, but with enthusiasm and a willingness to learn along the way.
So if you’ve been overthinking, delaying, or second-guessing yourself, maybe it's time to take a lesson from a child with a lemonade stand. Just start. No overthinking, no waiting—just like my daughter did on that summer afternoon.
