By Ilsa SophiaPublished 8 months ago 4 min read

MASH is one of the most iconic TV shows in American history, and at the heart of it was actress Loretta Swit, known for her unforgettable role as Major Margaret “Hot Lips” Houlihan. As time passes and the original cast members grow older, fans often wonder: Is Loretta Swit still alive? Did Loretta Swit pass away? What did Loretta Swit die of? In this article, we’ll explore the legacy of Loretta Swit, the **MASH cast**, and the truth about her life today.

Who Is Loretta Swit?

Loretta Swit, sometimes misspelled as "Loretta Switt" or even "Lotetta Swit," was born on November 4, 1937. She’s best known for playing Hot Lips Houlihan on the long-running TV series MAS*H, a role she portrayed from 1972 to 1983. Swit’s character, Major Margaret Houlihan, was a strong, sharp, and sometimes comical Army nurse stationed at a mobile hospital during the Korean War.

Over the years, Swit’s performance was praised for bringing depth and growth to a character who started as a strict, by-the-book officer and evolved into a caring, independent woman.

Loretta Swit and the MAS*H Cast

The MAS*H TV show had a beloved cast that included Alan Alda (Hawkeye Pierce), Jamie Farr (Klinger), Mike Farrell (B.J. Hunnicutt), Harry Morgan (Colonel Potter), and others. Loretta Swit and Alan Alda, in particular, had strong on-screen chemistry that made their scenes unforgettable.

The show was both funny and emotional, often tackling serious themes like war, death, and healing. It aired for 11 seasons and concluded in 1983 with a finale watched by over 100 million people — a record that stood for decades.

Hot Lips Houlihan: A Complex Character

Loretta Swit’s character, Hot Lips Houlihan, was initially seen as a tough, military-minded nurse who often clashed with Hawkeye and Trapper. Over time, her character became more nuanced. She showed vulnerability, strength, and emotional depth, especially after breaking off her toxic relationship with Major Frank Burns.

Swit won two Emmy Awards for her performance, and her portrayal helped break stereotypes about women in the military. Margaret Houlihan became a symbol of empowerment for many women watching the show during the 70s and 80s.

Loretta Swit Today: Is She Still Alive?

Despite many online searches asking, “Did Loretta Swit pass away?” or “When did Loretta Swit die?”, the answer is: No, Loretta Swit is still alive as of 2025.

She is in her late 80s and continues to live a quiet, meaningful life. Swit is active in animal rights and humanitarian causes. She even wrote a book, SwitHeart, which showcases her passion for animals and art.

So if you’ve seen rumors of a “MAS*H star dies” headline, it’s likely referring to another cast member. Over the years, the MAS*H family has lost some beloved stars, but Loretta Swit is very much alive.

I remember watching MASH as a kid. It was one of those shows that was both hilarious and thought-provoking. Loretta Swit was amazing as Hot Lips. Her character's transformation was really well done. I wonder how she felt about playing such a complex role for so long. And that finale! It was huge. Do you think any other show will ever have an audience that big again? The cast chemistry was great. Alan Alda and Swit had some really memorable scenes. I'm curious what made their on-screen relationship work so well. Maybe it was the contrast between their characters. What do you think?
