The Thing About Vocal

I have no beef with Vocal...except this one thing...

By KaciePublished 4 years ago 3 min read

Dear Vocal Readers,

Oh, Vocal, what a platform! I've had no bad experience on Vocal thus far and have found the platform to be an awesome gateway to bigger and brighter things. It's a great place to get experience writing and gain some knowledge on almost any topic you can think of. With all that said, there is one problem I have with Vocal. Want to know what it is? Okay, I'll let you in on my secret so lean in close...

The 600 word minimum

You heard correctly, I hate the 600 word minimum requirement they place on our pieces of writing. There have been countless times where I've got an urge to write but I just cannot find 600 words to say. Sometimes we simply do not need 600 words in order to get our point across. It honestly reminds me of something I was taught throughout high school and college: do not just add words to your writing to make it meet the page or word requirement. Now why is this? It boils down to the statement of quality over quantity.

This aspect of Vocal really stinks. It's driven me to write on the platform named Medium instead. There I can write whatever I want and not have to worry about the number of words I've scrapped out of my head. Like even now I am at 230 words and I'm struggling to think of how I'm going to finish this piece. I'm not even halfway done with the requirement and I have very little left to share.

So, that leaves us with the question of how we finish this piece. No really, I'm asking you, "How do I finish this piece?" Please share your thoughts so I can get out of this situation I've put myself in. I mean maybe I can just talk about random stuff? Perhaps that would get this piece rejected from being published. But let us push the limits of Vocal and see if this can still make it to your eyes.

Since you asked and you want to know so badly, my favorite color is green. Not an ugly dark green either, I'm talking about that beautiful light green. Or the shade that's right in-between blue and green like a mint green of sorts! And since you also asked about my favorite number I guess I'll tell you that it's the number 11. Why is that? Well, it's got perfect symmetry. It is pleasing to the eye and it's the number 1 but...TWICE! What number could be better than 11?

Wow so even my rant about some of my favorite things didn't get us to 600. We currently stand at a whopping 451 words. Anything past 200 has been all but useless to be honest, but that proves my point about the requirement being an issue. None of what you read about me will have any importance on your life nor will it benefit you in any way shape or form. Extra words do not equal a better piece. It produces unnecessary filler and fluff where it should not belong.

This experience sitting here and trying to come up with any combination of words that make sense has honestly been torture. Perhaps Vocal is not the platform for me. Well, then this may very well be a goodbye. Maybe I'll post a short story or two in the future but until then I got nothing that is worth writing 600 words about. Adios my friends, and good luck writing!

Sincerely from my tired and irritated fingers,

Kacie

(Still not 600 oh wait there we go!)

I've only just started writting on vocal more recently and I absolutely agree. The 600 word minimum is exhausting for writing small things.
